Jenna Heller posted her fourth-straight double double (26 assists and 14 digs) as the University of the Pacific volleyball team lost in four - 22-25, 25-23, 25-19, 25-23 - to UNLV in a neutral-site matchup in Tempe, Arizona on Friday.
The contest was tightly contested over the four sets as the match featured 17 lead changes and was tied on 42 occasions. For Pacific (3-8), the efforts by Heller at the setter position played a key role in a 20-kill by
Alexa Edwards, who also had nine digs. Plus,
Gabby Leo had 17 assists for Pacific, who hit .157 in the loss. Tigers' libero
Jadyn Tubbs added 18 digs and
Kennedy Kaminsky had seven kills and four blocks.Â
UNLV (8-2) had 18 kills by Mariena Hayden to go along with two service aces to lead the Rebels. The UNLV frontline recorded 12 blocks, including eight by Jordyn Freeman.Â
Set 1
UNLV scored the first three points of the set and built a pair of four-point advantages. The Tigers came back to tie the set on six occasions, including at 21. With the set tied at 21, Pacific went ahead on a kill by
Darina Kumanova as the Tigers secured the opening set with a 4-1 run. The Tigers hit .316 in the opening set with eight kills by Edwards.
Set 2
The second set was indicative of the match with 12 tie scores and three lead changes. The Tigers had five-different players with multiple kills. The difference in the set was the .225 hitting percentage for the Rebels with six kills from Mariena Hayden. Pacific held an 18-14 lead until UNLV came back to tie the set at 20 to prompt a Tigers timeout. The Rebels came away with the set victory by a 25-23 margin.
Set 3
The two teams traded the first 12 points to begin the set but Pacific would not be able to stretch a lead beyond two points. With the set tied at 13, a service error put UNLV ahead for the remainder of the set. Five was the magic number for Pacific as Edwards added five more kills, Leo and Heller each had five assists and Tubbs had five digs. The Rebels hit .286 in the set to go along with eight blocks for the 25-19 victory.
Set 4
Pacific erased an early 3-1 deficit in favor of a 7-4 lead. The Rebels and Tigers went back and forth with the set tied on five more occasions until UNLV put together a 4-0 spurt for a 17-13 lead. The Rebels remained in front until a 7-2 run by the Tigers tied the set at 22. The Rebels' Hayden had an answer with back-to-back kills to get to set and match point. Despite a kill by
Kaelyn Saler, the Rebels got another kill from Hayden to wrap up the match.Â
Next, Pacific will start West Coast Conference play with a matchup at BYU on Thursday, Sept. 23 at 6 p.m.Â
