Tigers Lose in Four to Pac 12 foe, Arizona State

STOCKTON, Calif. – Despite a double double performance each by freshman Jenna Heller and sophomore Alexa Edwards, the University of the Pacific volleyball team lost in four to host Arizona State, 25-20, 25-15, 24-26, 25-20 on Thursday in Tempe.

Arizona State (7-3) hit at a .231 clip as Marta Levinska and Iman Osanovic finished with 15 and 13 kills, respectively to lead ASU. Levinska also had a match-high six service aces to go along with three blocks.  

Pacific (3-7) picked up 24 assists and 10 digs from Jenna Heller for her seventh double double of the season and 13 kills and 10 digs for her third double double from Alexa Edwards in the loss. Plus, the Tigers also had seven service aces and seven blocks in the contest.

Set 1
After going back and forth most of the set as the set was tied on six occasions and featured just two lead changes. Arizona State overcame a 14-13 deficit with five-straight points to take an 18-14 lead. Each team recorded 12 kills in the set. The difference was a .216 hitting percentage and four blocks by the host Sun Devils. The Sun Devils went on to win the set by a 25-20.

Set 2
Arizona State started the second set on a 5-0 run to prompt an early Pacific timeout. The Tigers found themselves down by as much as seven, including a 19-12 deficit. Later in the set, Pacific came back with three-straight points including a kill each from Lucy Carpenter and Darina Kumanova to go with a Jenna Heller kill that cut the ASU lead to 19-15. The host Sun Devils answered the spurt with six-straight to close out the set for a 25-15 victory.

Set 3
The two teams traded the first four points before Pacific went ahead on a service error by ASU and an ace by Edwards. Pacific extended the lead to as much as seven, 12-4. Arizona State came back within four, 17-13, with a 5-0 run midway through the set. The Sun Devils continued the comeback and eventually tied the set at 20 and 24, respectively. Edwards and Lucy Carpenter came back with back-to-back kills to lead Pacific to a 26-24 set victory.

Set 4
The first 14 points saw the two teams tied at four, six and seven, respectively. After falling behind by five, 14-9, the Tigers came back with five-straight points to tie the set at 14. Four of the five points came by the Pacific frontline, who recorded blocks. After Pacific had rallied to tie the set at 14, the two teams were tied on five more occasions. With the set tied at 19, a three-point swing in favor of ASU put the Wildcats ahead for the remainder of the set.

Next, Pacific will take on UNLV on Friday at 1 p.m. in its final match of the Sparky Volleyball Invitational.
