Tigers Volleyball Set to Host Pacific Community Classic

The Pacific volleyball team will open the home season by hosting the Pacific Community Classic, Sept. 3-4. The Tigers will host Tarleton State, UC San Diego and California.

Pacific comes into the tournament with an 0-3 mark after opening the season at the SMU DoubleTree Invitational. Sophomore Alexa Edwards (Sacramento, Calif.) leads the Tigers with 47 kills (4.27 kills per set) through the first three matches. She recorded her first double double of the season with 20 kills and 14 digs against Stephen F. Austin. Newcomers Darina Kumanova (Sofia, Bulgaria) and Jenna Heller (Gilbert, Ariz.) started their Tiger careers with 32 kills and 53 assists, respectively. Also returnees Gabby Leo (Phoenix, Ariz.) had a team-best 57 assists (5.18 assists per set) and Jadyn Tubbs (Turlock, Calif.) paced the team with 54 digs (4.91 digs per set) for the Tigers.

Tarleton State, in Stephenville, Texas, will come to Stockton with a 1-1 mark after a season-opening trip to Miami, Florida. The TexAnns defeated FIU, 20-25, 25-20, 25-23, 25-13 after dropping its season opener to Miami (Fla.), 25-23, 25-18, 25-23. The match between Tarleton State and the Tigers will see Pacific assistant coach Katie Hoekman face her former co-worker and Tarleton head coach Mary Schindler. Hoekman served as an assistant coach for the TexAnns in 2018.

UC San Diego will come to Stockton in search of its first win of the season after going 0-3 at the Cactus Classic hosted by the University of Arizona, last weekend. Two of the losses came in five-set contests for the Tritons and 12th year head coach Ricci Luyties. Due to the pandemic, UC San Diego did not have a 2020 season.

Cal, in Berkeley, California, returns to the Alex G. Spanos Center for the first time since 2017. The Pac 12 member and the Tigers have battled in a pair of five-set matchups in the last two meetings with the home team coming away with the win. Pacific has won the last three meetings at the Alex G. Spanos Center. The Bears come to town with a 2-1 mark after beginning its season at the Tulane Tournament. Cal started the season with a pair of straight-set wins over Alabama A&M and Northwestern State before dropping a 25-23, 26-28, 25-16, 25-22 decision to the host Green Wave.

For those planning on attending the tournament, masks are required.
