Bats Start Strong in Series Opener Against Broncos

SANTA CLARA, Calif. – Returning to action to continue conference play, the Pacific baseball team (13-27, 3-13) got back in the win column with a strong offensive showing in their 11-7 win over Santa Clara (13-26, 6-16) on Friday afternoon.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
  • With nothing happening through the first inning, the Tigers got on the board first in the top of the second when senior Wyatt Hoffman delivered a two-out RBI single into centerfield to plate classmate Steven Langley, who got his first start in the Orange & Black on Friday.
  • Quickly thereafter, the Broncos responded with their first three runs of the game on two hits and one Tiger error in the bottom of the second, holding a 3-1 advantage through two complete.
  • In the following innings, neither team did much offensively as Pacific evened the score at three with two runs in the top of the fifth. Finding his power stroke, sophomore Thomas Gavello launched his eighth long ball of the season after Hoffman walked to begin the inning. Just a few batters later, junior Ben Nemivant laced an RBI double into right center field to plate senior Charles Middleton and give the Tigers their first lead of the contest, 4-3.
  • Denying the Bronco attack right after, Pacific added four runs on three hits in the top of the sixth, which included a three-run shot from Middleton to push the Tiger advantage to 8-3.
  • Chipping away, Santa Clara tacked on two runs in the home half of the sixth as UOP remained on top, 8-5, at the seventh inning stretch. After junior Jackson Vaughan came on in relief of starter Hayden Pearce in the bottom of the seventh, the Broncos trimmed their deficit to just one run, 8-7. However, Vaughan would bear down and ultimately force a popup by Jake MacNichols, who currently paces the WCC with 10 home runs.
  • Padding their lead with some late insurance, Pacific scored three runs on five hits in the top of the eighth, which was highlighted by senior Luke Price's two-run double and senior James McClenaghan's RBI single.
  • Coming on two pitch the final two innings, junior Zach Patterson would lock down the Bronco lineup in their last opportunities at the plate as the Tigers held on to notch their third conference victory of the year by a final score of 11-7.

NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • Finishing two-for-three with three RBI and three runs scored, Middleton extended his team-leading hitting streak to 16 consecutive games. Additionally, junior James Arakawa trails Middleton with an 11-game hitting streak after going one-for-four with one RBI, one run scored and one walk on Friday.
  • With his eighth home run, Gavello is now tied for fifth in the WCC in this department as the second year Tiger also sits solely in fourth with 33 total runs scored in 2021.
  • On the rubber, Patterson logged his fifth appearance in his last six outings without allowing a run with two innings of scoreless relief to begin the series. Overall, the Tigers also extended their winning streak to four straight over Santa Clara after sweeping the season series from SCU in 2019.
