Pacific Battles No. 1/1 Gonzaga, Falls Late

Box Score STOCKTON, Calif. – Following only a 48-hour notice prior to tip-off, the Pacific men's basketball team (5-5, 2-4) gave No. 1/1 Gonzaga all they could handle on Thursday night at the Alex G. Spanos Center. The Tigers led the Bulldogs 47-46 with 12 minutes remaining in the contest, but Gonzaga would go on a 30-11 run to close out the game with Pacific's big men in foul trouble to remain perfect on the season, extending the nation's longest win streak to 22 games.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
  • Pacific put together an impressive 9-3 run to open the ballgame and held the nation's most potent offense to just 31 points in the first half on 10-for-24 from the floor, including 2-for-8 from beyond-the-arc. The Tigers led at the half, 32-31, behind nine first half points from sophomore Daniss Jenkins. Pacific outrebounded Gonzaga 18-13 in the opening half and held the Bulldogs' leading scorer, Corey Kispert, to just two points.
  • After the Bulldogs scored the opening bucket of the second half, the Tigers went on an 8-4 run to take a 40-35 lead and prompt Gonzaga head coach Mark Few to call a timeout.
  • At the 14:01 mark, sophomore Pierre Crockrell converted a three-point play that kept the Pacific lead a five-point spread at 45-40. After Kispert, who scored 11 consecutive second half points for Gonzaga, gave the Bulldogs a 46-45 lead to cap a 6-0 run, senior Broc Finstuen put in a layup on the other end to give the Tigers the lead back at 47-46.
  • After Kispert hit a three to give the Bulldogs a 49-47 lead, graduate student Jordan Bell made a driving shot and appeared to have been fouled, but Bell instead was whistled for a charge, his fourth personal foul which seemed to change the momentum of the contest. After that point, the Tigers would not lead in the game again.
  • With 9:57 remaining in regulation, redshirt junior Nigel Shadd put in a layup for the Tigers that cut the Gonzaga lead to one point at 51-50. The Bulldogs, though, would proceed to go on a 14-2 run to get out to a 66-52 advantage with 5:08 remaining.
  • Displaying their skillsets down the stretch, Gonzaga would ultimately secure the victory and take down Pacific by a final score of 76-58. Despite the loss, the Tigers held the Bulldogs to their second lowest point total of the season for an offense that averaged 94.3 points per game heading into Thursday's matchup.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • Bell was named the Hardworking Player of the Game for the second consecutive contest after notching his second straight double-double with 11 points, 10 rebounds, 1 block and 1 steal on 5-of-9 shooting.
  • Individually, Jenkins led the way with 13 points for the Tigers on 5-for-18, from the field while Crockrell filled up the stat sheet with 12 points, 6 assists and 4 rebounds.
