SANTA CLARA, Calif. – After coming back from a two-set deficit on Tuesday night against Santa Clara, the University of the Pacific Women's Volleyball team dropped a WCC match to the Broncos in three sets at Leavey Center on Wednesday night. Santa Clara won 3-0 (25-23, 25-15, 29-27). The Tigers fall to 2-6 on the season.
MATCH SUMMARY
Pacific found itself trailing by as much as five points in the opening set, behind 19-14. A run of 8-2, put the Tigers ahead after a kill by
Sedona Sherman. However, the Broncos scored four of the next five points to take the opening set, 25-23.
A .344 attack percentage for Santa Clara helped with a 25-15 set win. The Broncos never trailed in the set.
Riley Patterson had four kills in the set for Pacific.
While Santa Clara jumped out to a 5-1 lead in set three, Pacific roared back with a string of five points, with the lead taken after a service ace by
Jadyn Tubbs. The remainder of the set as it reached 24-24 was very even, with neither team leading by more than two points. Reaching a tie at 24-24 meant extra points were needed. Pacific reached set point after a kill by
Alexa Edwards, and faced match point three times thereafter. In two of the match points,
Kaelyn Saler had kills to even the set back up. But Santa Clara finished the contest at its next match point by winning the set, 29-27 for a 3-0 sweep on Wednesday.
NOTABLE STATS
- Patterson and Saler had 10 kills each. Saler had a .529 attack percentage on 17 attempts.
- With 10 digs on Wednesday, Patterson has reached a double-double in seven of eight matches played this season.
- Gabby Leo had a double double with 36 assists and 11 digs.
- Tubbs led the Tigers in digs with 16.
- Edwards had a season-high in blocks with four.
- Julia Sangiacomo had 13 kills and four blocks for the Broncos on Wednesday.
UP NEXT
On Tuesday, Pacific returns to action at Alex G. Spanos Center with a home WCC matchup against Saint Mary's. Opening serve is set for 6 p.m. The matchup being made up from its originally scheduled date of January 27 and is the first of two contests this season against the Gaels.
