Hot Shooting Propels Cougars Past Tigers

Box Score STOCKTON, Calif. - The Pacific men's basketball team (6-7, 3-6) could not consistently find their rhythm offensively against BYU on Thursday night at the Alex G. Spanos Center, falling to the Cougars, 80-52, in the teams' final meeting of the regular season.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
  • Pacific jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the contest on a layup from senior Broc Finstuen, followed by a made free throw by sophomore Pierre Crockrell II. After BYU got a Matt Haarms dunk, Finstuen got the Tigers lead back to three with a made jumper in the paint. BYU would then tie it on the first of five made three-pointers by freshman Caleb Lohner. From that point on, Pacific would never lead again in the contest as Lohner hit a pair of free throws at the 16:39 mark to give BYU the lead for good.
  • BYU went on to shoot 46 percent in the first half while going 10-for-11 from the free throw line as they took a 38-26 lead into the locker room. Pacific shot 44 percent (11-for-25) in the first half, but went just 2-for-9 from three-point range. The Tigers were also hampered by foul trouble as Finstuen, who had a team-high nine first half points, had three fouls by intermission.
  • Pacific would cut into the BYU lead over the first four minutes of the second half, getting a layup from senior Jervay Green at the 16:27 mark to cut the Tigers' deficit to nine, 42-33. On the ensuing trip down the floor, however, Green would be whistled for a foul and then be assessed a technical foul, which resulted in two made free throws for Alex Barcello followed by a made three from Brandon Averette. Ultimately, the Cougars enjoyed a five-point possession that seemed to breathe life into their play down the stretch.
  • Lohner would lead the way for BYU, scoring a game-high 19 points on 6-for-8 from the floor, including 5-for-6 from three-point range while also finishing one rebound shy of a double-double. Alex Barcello also addeded 15 points on 3-for-7 shoting, including an 8-for-10 performance from the free throw line. Averette added 10 points and a game-high seven assists as BYU would lead by as many as 30 with 1:40 remaining in the contest. Encountering little trouble in the closing minutes, the Cougars would hang on for the 80-52 victory.

NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • Senior James Hampshire was tabbed the Hardworking Player of the Game after tying his career-high with 10 points, which included shooting a perfect 4-of-4 from the field.
  • Overall, Finstuen and fellow senior Justin Moore would each tally 10 points for the Tigers.
  • As a team, Pacific led the Cougars in points in the paint (32-16) and second chance points (11-9).

UP NEXT:
Continuing a stretch of four games in nine days, Pacific will travel to Portland to take on the Pilots this Saturday, Feb. 20 in a matinee. Tip-off is set for 1:00 p.m. PT at the Chiles Center.
