STOCKTON, Calif. – Santa Clara secured the come-from-behind win over host Pacific on Tuesday night at the Alex G. Spanos Center. The Broncos (12-15, 8-9 WCC) bounced back after a first set loss to win the next three sets to defeat the Tigers (13-16, 10-8 WCC) 17-25, 25-14, 25-21, 25-20.
Michelle Schaffer paced the Santa Clara attack with a .382 hitting percentage and 15 kills. The Broncos posted a .282 hitting percentage compared to .062 for the Tigers. Pacific served up 10 service aces – four from
Gabby Leo - in the loss, plus
Alexa Edwards had 15 kills and 12 digs for a double double.
Set 1
• To start the match, both teams were tied at five and 11.
• Then, the Tigers went on a 10-2 run midway after it was tied at 11 that propelled the Tigers to the opening set victory.
• For the set, Pacific recorded four service aces and
Alexa Edwards had four kills and three digs.
Ramonni Cook added three kills, plus
Kennedy Kaminsky and
Lucy Carpenter each had two as the Tigers took the early lead.
Set 2
• The Tigers started the set in front by as much as three, 7-4 before a 6-2 spurt by the visitors prompted a Pacific timeout.
• With Santa Clara holding a 10-9 lead, the Broncos added to their lead with a 7-1 run that forced the Tigers to use their final timeout of the set.
• Santa Clara secured the set by a 25-14 margin on the strength of a .429 hitting percentage with five kills from Shaffer and four from Julia Sangiacomo.
Set 3
• The two teams traded the first four points before four-straight by Pacific went ahead 6-2 – two of which came on service aces by
Jadyn Tubbs.
• Later in the set, the Broncos went ahead on a 12-4 run for a 14-10 lead. Santa Clara maintained the lead for the rest of the set en route to a 25-21 victory.
• The one-two tandem of Shaffer and Sangiacomo led the Broncos with five and four kills, respectively.
• The Broncos posted a .480 hitting percentage in the set for the two set to one lead.
Set 4
• Like the other three sets, Pacific had an early lead in the set. The Tigers had a 6-3 advantage in the set.
• The Broncos came back to tie the set on seven occasions, including at 19.
• Tied at 19, a brief two-point swing in favor of the visitors was just enough as Santa Clara remained in front for the rest of the set.
• Edwards tried to bring the Tigers back with a seven-kill and a .583 hitting percentage in the set. The Tiger frontline had three blocks and limited Santa Clara to a .100 hitting percentage.
