OGDEN, Utah – The Pacific volleyball team saw its season end in a five-set loss to Portland State, 26-28, 25-15, 25-12, 23-25, 15-7, in the first round of the Women's NIVC (National Invitational Volleyball Championship) on the campus of Weber State University.
The Tigers (13-17) had a pair of players –
Darina Kumanova (10 kills, 12 digs) and
Gabby Leo (26 assists, 14 digs) – post double double performances.
The Vikings (20-10) were a balanced attack as they posted a .234 hitting percentage and had a 16-5 advantage in blocks in the win. Parker Webb led Portland State with 15 kills, five service aces and four blocks.
SET 1
• Pacific overcame a nine-point deficit, 16-7, to win the first set by a 28-26 margin.
• Later in the set, Pacific went on a 13-3 run to take a 21-20 lead on the Vikings.
• In the run, the Tigers picked up three service aces to help them overcome the deficit.
SET 2
• The second set went back and forth through the first six points until a two-point swing in favor of the Vikings put PSU ahead 7-5 early in the set.
• Portland State led for the remainder of the set, including a decisive 7-1 run in the set.
SET 3
• Pacific started the set with an early 6-3 lead until five-straight by the Vikings put PSU ahead 8-6.
• The five-point swing put Portland State ahead for the rest of the set.
SET 4
• Down 12-11 in the set, a pair of
Sedona Sherman service aces and a kill by
Darina Kumanova put the Tigers ahead 14-12.
• The Vikings came back to regain the lead on a pair of occasions until a kill by
Kennedy Kaminsky and
Alexa Edwards tied the set at 17.
• Down 21-19, five-straight points by the Tigers that included two more kills by Edwards to go along with a block as well as an ace by
Megan Nishimura put Pacific in front by a 23-21 margin.
• Kumanova put the finishing touches on the set with a kill for a 25-23 victory in the set to force a fifth and deciding set.
SET 5
• The two teams traded the first six points until five unanswered by PSU put the Vikings ahead by an 8-3 margin.
• The five-point deficit was too much for the Tigers to overcome as Portland State won the set by a 15-7 margin and secure the opening round victory.

Alexa Edwards; 12 digs and 10 kills -
Darina Kumanova;
Gabby Leo - 26 assists and 14 digs.
Sedona Sherman and
Megan Nishimura each had three service aces. Plus, Edwards added three blocks to go along with two each from Sherman and
Ramonni Cook.
Jadyn Tubbs had 12 digs and seven assists in the defeat.
The Tigers end the season with a 13-17 overall record.
