Pacific Volleyball Knocks Off No. 23 San Diego

 
STOCKTON, Calif. - After a strong performance on Thursday against #4 BYU, the Pacific volleyball team built off its momentum en route to a 25-21, 25-22, 18-25, 25-20 win over #23 San Diego on Saturday afternoon.
 
The Tigers (13-15, 10-7 WCC) served up 10 service aces and hit .184 in the win as Paci­fic picked up its second win over a ranked team on the season for the first time since 2009. The win over the Toreros is the first by Pacific since the first meeting between the two teams in 1976.
 
Three Pacific players had double digit kills including a match-high 16 from Ramonni Cook to go along with 13 and 12 from Darina Kumanova and Alexa Edwards, respectively. Setters Gabby Leo and Jenna Heller had 30 and 14 assists, respectively. Heller also had eight digs and a team-high four service aces. Plus, libero Jadyn Tubbs was all over the court with 17 digs, six assists and two service aces.
 
The Toreros (20-6, 14-3 WCC) were paced by a match-high 21 kills from Grace Frohling, who along with Katie Lukes, who had 11 kills led San Diego as they hit .215 in the loss. The USD frontline had eight blocks and setters Isadora Tercariol and Laura Madill had 19 and 18 assists, respectively. 
 
"This group thrives on competing," said Pacific head coach Greg Gibbons following the win. "This second half of the season, we have shown that we can compete with anyone. I am super proud of what these girls have done. I can't say enough good things about them."
  
Set 1
• The Tigers started the match with a 6-0 lead for the early advantage which prompted a USD timeout. The early run was sparked by three kills by Cook and a Darina Kumanova service ace.
• Pacific managed to stretch its early lead to as much as 10-3.
• USD came back to tie the set at 14, following an 11-4 run.
• The two teams would go on to be tied on one more time at 15 before a three-point swing on the service game of Jadyn Tubbs put Pacific ahead for the remainder of the set.
• Cook and Kumanova finished the set with five and four kills, respectively to lead Pacific, who hit .226 in the opening set. Jenna Heller had two aces, two assists and three digs for the Tigers.
• USD out hit Pacific with a .323 hitting percentage.

Set 2  
• The second set was the most tightly contested of the match as the score was tied nine times and saw five lead changes.
• The two teams went back and forth as the set was tied at 7 through the first 14 points. Back-to-back kills by Kumanova gave Pacific an early 9-7 lead. 
• The Tigers remained in the lead until San Diego came back to tie the set on three occasions. 
• With the set tied at 13, a Jadyn Tubbs service ace and a kill by Cook put Pacific ahead by two and for remainder of the set. 
• For the set, four-different Tigers (Ramonni Cook, Kennedy Kaminsky, Sedona Sherman and Darina Kumanova) had three kills and three-different (Alexa Edwards, Jadyn Tubbs and Jenna Heller) players had a service ace to go along with five assists each from Gabby Leo and Jenna Heller. Pacific managed to post a .244 hitting percentage in the set.
 
Set 3
• The two teams went back and forth to begin the set as the Toreros went ahead for a 7-4 margin. USD would remain in front for the rest of the set.
• A .200 hitting percentage led by an eight kill attack of Grace Frohling of USD overshadowed a five kill, five dig set by Alexa Edwards for Pacific. 

Set 4
• Pacific started the season with an early 3-1 lead before USD came back to tie it at 3.
• The Tigers went back in front with four-straight points for a 7-3 lead.
• Pacific remained in front until USD tied the set at 11. The Tigers regained the lead when Darina Kumanova delivered a kill to spark a 7-0 run for Pacific. 
• The Tigers would go on to lead for the remainder of the set to secure the victory.
• The set saw Cook post seven kills to lead Pacific, who hit .143 as they held USD to a .088 hitting percentage. Edwards and Kumanova had four and three kills, respectively. Gabby Leo had nine assists and an ace, plus Tubbs added two assists, an ace and eight digs.
