STOCKTON, Calif. – A successful conversion of a penalty kick in the 79
th minute by
Ryan Her propelled the University of the Pacific men's soccer team to a 1-0 win over No. 9 Loyola Marymount on Saturday night at Knoles Field.
The Tigers (6-3, 1-0 WCC) and the Lions (8-1-1, 0-1 WCC) each got off 12 shots in the contest. Loyola Marymount edged Pacific, 7-5 on shots on goal. Pacific goalkeeper
Eric Cotton got the first shutout for the Tigers since October 12, 2019. Cotton kept the LMU off the scoreboard with a save on a Lions' penalty kick in the 52
nd minute.
It was just the second time in 10 games that the Lions had been shutout and the first time since Nov. 9, 2020 that a WCC team had kept them off the scoreboard in a loss.
First Half
Samuel Villalta and
Yazid Omri each had a shot in the eighth and 10
th minute that were saved by Lions' goalkeeper Jacob Jackson to keep the match scoreless. LMU had an opportunity in both the 27
th and 35
th minute where the Tigers' defense and Cotton rose to the occasion to keep the contest tied at 0-0.
Second Half
Cotton made his save on the Lions' penalty kick in the 52
nd minute as the game remained scoreless. After two chances came up short for the Tigers, Pacific ended the scoreless contest when Her scored on a penalty kick in the 78
th minute. Cotton closed out the contest with two more saves to preserve the 1-0 victory.
