MORAGA, Calif. – The Pacific volleyball team dropped a 25-17, 25-18, 25-23 decision to host Saint Mary's in a West Coast Conference matchup on Friday night.
The Tigers (7-12, 4-4 WCC) were led by a 12 and 10 kill performance by
Darina Kumanova and
Alexa Edwards, respectively. Both Kumanova and Edwards posted a team-best .214 hitting percentage. Plus,
Sedona Sherman had four kills and three blocks,
Jenna Heller added 24 assists and
Jadyn Tubbs provided 22 digs and two service aces in the loss.
The Gaels (9-8, 3-5 WCC) were paced by a 11-kill performance from Chandler Cowell as they posted a .209 hitting percentage in the win. Jennifer Laird had five kills and a .500 hitting percentage to go along with four blocks and a service ace, plus Ella Sandt and Alosina Thompson had 16 and 11 assists, respectively.
Set 1
The first set was tied on seven occasions and featured four lead changes as Saint Mary's came away with a 25-17 victory in the first set. The host Gaels were able to post a 70% sideout percentage and hit at a match-high .312 clip. Seven different players for SMC had a kill, including four by Hawley Harrer. A four-point spurt after the set was tied at 11 put the home team ahead for the remainder of the set. Twice, Pacific had a one-point lead but was unable to add to it.
Set 2
The second set was tied on four occasions and two more lead changes. An early 7-5 lead by the Tigers was erased as the Gaels managed to tie the set at seven and eight before regaining the lead when Selbie Christensen and Trinity Durfee came away with a block to put SMC ahead for the rest of the set. Darina Kumanova record six of her 12 kills to lead the Tigers.
Set 3
Pacific started the second set with a 6-3 lead. SMC came back to tie the set at 11 and on four additional occasions. With the set tied at 21, the Gaels pushed ahead for a lead on a block by Hawley Harrer and Jennifer Laird for a 22-21 advantage. The Tigers rallied to tie the set at 23 on back-to-back kills by
Kennedy Kaminsky and
Alexa Edwards. SMC closed out the match, winning the next two points on a Pacific hitting error and a kill by the Gaels' Ashley Reed.
Next, Pacific will face Santa Clara on Thursday, Oct. 21 at 6 p.m. at the Leavey Center.
