STOCKTON, Calif. – The University of the Pacific men's basketball program signed another integral piece of their future on Friday afternoon as Chipola College forward Marial Mading officially announced his commitment to the Tigers.
After the departure of 2019-20 WCC Defensive Player of the Year and senior leader
Jahlil Tripp, Mading will immediately step into a significant role under head coach
Damon Stoudamire.
"Marial is an athlete who is just tapping into his multi-dimensional skill set," said Stoudamire. "You can move him all over the floor with the versatility he has. I truly believe he has a chance to be a major contributor right away for us."
Hailing from Perth, Australia, the four-star recruit originally burst onto the recruiting scene in the summer of 2018, garnering offers from Texas Tech, Houston, Hofstra, Rhode Island and Tulane. Initially, Mading chose to attend the University of Rhode Island. After spending a redshirt semester in South Kingstown, he decided to transfer to Chipola College in Marianna, Florida.
In his lone season with the Indians, Mading averaged 12.0 points, 4.2 rebounds and 1.4 assists per game in 26 games played, which included 17 starts. Overall, the versatile wing hit 33 shots from behind-the-arc last season, in addition to saving his best performance for last with 31 points, 10 rebounds and 6 assists in a win over Gulf Coast State College on Feb. 19.
In addition to Pacific, Mading's impressive skill set helped the 6'11" forward to earn offers from Florida, Kansas, Nebraska, Oregon and Texas A&M following his season at Chipola.
