Higgins Nears Triple Double in Close Loss to Toreros

SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The Pacific women's basketball team (14-11, 7-7 WCC) surged ahead in the second half and held San Diego cold from the floor in the third quarter, but it wasn't enough as the Tigers dropped a close 66-61 contest to the Toreros (15-9, 9-4 WCC) on Thursday evening at the Jenny Craig Pavilion in San Diego.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:

First Half
  • Brooklyn McDavid held all the Tiger offense up to the first media break, accounting for all four of Pacific's points on 2-of-3 shooting in the opening four minutes.
  • Valerie Higgins recorded a pair of steals before the first quarter had ended, breaking the 90-steal mark for the second consecutive season.
  • Higgins, who entered Thursday with 3.71 per contest, went into the halftime break having already exceeded that with five to put her at 94 on the year. Thursday was the third game in the last four that the Granada Hills native had reached five takeaways.
  • Pacific ended the half on an 8-0 run to pull within 34-30 at the break with Higgins and McDavid on the cusp of ten points each. Both finished with nine as Higgins went 7 of 8 from the free throw line.
Second Half
  • Pacific came out firing off an opening bucket from McDavid, using another 8-0 in just over a minute to pull ahead 42-39 on a three from Jordan Cruz at the 4:35 mark of the third quarter.
  • The surge continued with eight points from Higgins and six from McDavid in the third quarter on a combined 5-of-7 shooting.
  • At the other end of the floor, the Tigers held San Diego to just 30.8 percent from the floor in the third quarter with a 4-of-13 clip while Higgins collected three steals alone in the 10-minute frame.
  • Callie Kaiser hit a triple with 47 seconds to go, pulling Pacific within 63-61 to keep the Tigers in the game to the end.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • Higgins earned herself City of Stockton Human Resources Hardworking Player of the Game honors with 19 points, nine rebounds and seven steals to position herself two shy of tying Tine Freil (1989-90) for third all-time on the Pacific single-season steals chart.
  • McDavid finished right behind Higgins offensively, going for 17 points on 8-of-13 shooting with seven rebounds.
  • Higgins was clutch from the free throw line against the Toreros on Saturday, converting on 11 of 12 from the stripe to help the Tigers to an overall 15-of-18 clip for the game.
UP NEXT:
  • Pacific will leave the Golden State for its final road game of the 2019-20 season, tangling with BYU in a critical West Coast Conference matchup on Saturday, February 15 from the Marriott Center in Provo. The matchup with the Cougars will be followed by a return to the Alex G. Spanos Center for the final three games of the regular season against Saint Mary's, San Francisco and Santa Clara.
