STOCKTON, Calif. – Following the 2020 NBA Draft on Wednesday, Nov. 18, former Tiger standout
Jahlil Tripp has officially signed an Exhibit 10 contract with the Memphis Grizzlies.
Created in 2017 with the new CBA agreement,
SLAM magazine explains an Exhibit 10 contract as:
"An Exhibit 10 contract is a one-year, minimum salary NBA contract with a specific Exhibit 10 attachment built into it and no other bonuses. These attachments are not present in every NBA contract, only in deals in which both parties have agreed to include it. Exhibit 10 attachments allow the NBA team to convert a player's one-year, minimum contract into a two-way contract, but this must occur prior to the start of the regular season. Exhibit 10 attachments allow players to earn a bonus of $5,000 to $50,000 in the event that they are waived by the NBA team, then sign a deal with that franchise's G League affiliate and remain with that affiliate team for 60 days. This bonus $5,000 – $50,000 bonus, which does not count against the NBA salary cap, is in addition to the G League salary the player would also collect in this particular scenario. If a player's Exhibit 10 contract is converted to a two-way deal, the Exhibit 10 bonus converts to guaranteed salary."
Fresh of a historic senior season at Pacific that saw Tripp be named the 2019-20 WCC Defensive Player of the Year, the Brooklyn, N.Y. native becomes the first Tiger to reach the professional ranks of the NBA since Michael Olowakandi was drafted number one overall by the Los Angeles Clippers in 1998.
"Jahlil grew up right in front of our eyes," said head coach
Damon Stoudamire. "He allowed us to push him and responded to every challenge along the way. His perseverance, leadership and hard work is unmatched, so there is no doubt in my mind that he will have success in his career going forward. I don't need to talk about the basketball part because he's a better person! He has been such a joy to coach both on and off the court and I know he will continue to make all of us proud."
Wrapping up his career in the Orange and Black, Tripp put the finishing touches on a splendid career this past year by propelling Pacific to its first 20-win campaign since 2010-11 and a share of third place in the final regular season conference standings. Proving to be a force no matter the opponent, he also led the WCC with 11 double-doubles in addition to finishing atop the conference in rebounding with an average of 8.9 per game in 2019-20.
Throughout his three years in Stockton, Tripp never failed to impress. Overall, the 6'5" guard earned All-Conference honors in all three seasons at Pacific, including earning a spot on the All-WCC First Team in 2019-20. On Jan. 18, 2020, he became the 29
th athlete in program history to notch 1,000 career points.
Historically, Tripp left an indelible mark on the program and now ranks amongst the Tiger greats following his exceptional career under Stoudamire: third in steals (148), ninth in assists (308), twelfth in total rebounds (727) and sixteenth in total scoring (1,223 points).
With the
NBA releasing tentative start dates for the upcoming season this past week, training camp for the Memphis Grizzlies is currently set to begin on Dec. 1.
