Kakala Notches Career High as Comeback Falls Short Against Toreros

STOCKTON, Calif. – Loretta Kakala set a new career high with 15 points on another career high of 7-of-11 shooting, but the Pacific women's basketball team's (11-8, 4-4 WCC) comeback fell short by a score of 66-64 to San Diego (10-8, 4-3) Saturday afternoon in a close contest at the Alex G. Spanos Center.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:

First Half
  • Valerie Higgins started her work early, putting in six points on 3-of-3 shooting with three steals midway through the first quarter. Higgins ended the half with eight points on the same shooting clip, joining Lianna Tillman (four points, 2-of-2 shooting) as the only Tigers to shoot 100 percent from the field for the quarter.
  • Pacific as a team started out hotter than Thursday, converting on 6-of-8 shooting after one quarter. The offense though was just as fast-paced as Thursday, causing a few mishaps that resulted in 12 turnovers to San Diego's five.
  • Kaylin Randhawa drilled a three at the 2:59 mark of the second quarter to bring Pacific within one off the assist from Sofie Tryggedsson, but it wasn't enough as Pacific went into the half facing a 10-point deficit.
  • Pacific got after San Diego off the bench offensively, outscoring the Toreros 13-6 after the first quarter and 26-12 at the halftime break.
Second Half
  • Savannah Whitehead scored three straight buckets for the Tigers early in the third quarter, and converted a three-point play, inching her towards a new season high with seven points on 3-of-4 shooting and 1-of-1 from the stripe.
  • Higgins went into double-digit scoring for the 11thgame out of her last 12 and 15thoverall with an unassisted layup at the 5:08 mark of the third quarter.
  • Kakala found herself with a new season high after just three quarters, converting a layup at the end of the third quarter to put her at a season-high 11 points.
  • An 8-0 run for Pacific put the Tigers within earshot of the lead, pulling to 61-58 while going 2 of 3 on the run before Higgins tied the game
  • Pacific went on an 11-2 run late in the fourth quarter with six points coming from Higgins on an overall 4-of-6 shooting clip for the stretch.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • Pacific outscored the Toreros in the paint from the get-go on Saturday, finishing with a 44-16 advantage thanks in part to the play of Kakala.
  • Kakala finished the day with a new career high, racking up 15 points on 7-of-11 shooting – also a career high – to earn City of Stockton Human Resources Hardworking Player of the Game honors.
  • Higgins' 21 points made for her fifth 20-point outing of the year, but her eight steals were one shy of a career high, set this year at San Francisco (9).
UP NEXT:
  • Pacific travels to the Bay Area for its lone contest next week, facing Saint Mary's for another 2:00 p.m. tip from University Credit Union Pavilion in Moraga.
