Tigers Down Gaels in Overtime Thriller

MORAGA, Calif. – The Pacific women's basketball team (12-8, 5-4 WCC) pulled out a thrilling 68-66 overtime win over Saint Mary's (9-11, 4-5 WCC) Saturday afternoon at University Credit Union Pavilion in Moraga behind a season-high eight rebounds from Savannah Whitehead and a 12-of-19 clip from the free throw line.

First Half
  • Both teams suffered brief scoring droughts to start the day, but Pacific held the 6-0 advantage in second-chance points through the first media timeout with the Tigers leading 14-12 in the early going.
  • Kaylin Randhawa hit a corner three in the waning seconds of the first quarter as Pacific went into the quarter break with a 17-16 lead, led by six points from Sofie Tryggedsson that all came from downtown. Tryggedsson and Valerie Higgins led the Tigers with six apiece after a half of play with Pacific doubling up Saint Mary's 6-3 on second-chance points. 
Second Half
  • Brooklyn McDavid opened the second half with three straight buckets inside to cut the deficit to 32-27, but it was the only the beginning of a completely different 20 minutes of play for the Tigers.
  • Pacific continued punching back out of the halftime break, going on a 13-2 run to tie the ballgame at 32 after Whitehead's inside layup at the 6:32 mark of the third quarter.
  • Tryggedsson tied a season high at the 5:21 mark of the third quarter with her fourth three-pointer of the day to put Pacific ahead 39-34 and stretch the Tiger run to 20-4.
  • Both teams traded scoring spurts in the third frame with the Gaels grinding their way back at the end of the quarter to tie it at 43 heading to the fourth.
  • Lianna Tillman laid in her first bucket of the afternoon at the 3:35 mark of the fourth quarter to pull Pacific within one, 57-56. McDavid then went on a hot streak with a 7-of-8 clip from the field to help pull the Tigers within one at 60-59 with 12 seconds remaining.
Overtime
  • It was a back-and-forth affair in overtime with Pacific and Saint Mary's trading jabs, as five of Pacific's seven points in the extra five minutes came from the stripe - two each from McDavid and Tryggedsson.
  • The Tigers outrebounded Saint Mary's in the extra period 7-3, including 4-0 on the offensive glass. 
  • Higgins knocked down a clutch layup with 11 seconds left to put Pacific ahead 67-66. Tillman converted on the front end of a shooting foul, but Whitehead was there to fittingly clean up the rebound that put the game away.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • Pacific outworked the Gaels on the offensive glass to the tune of 24-6 on the day. 
  • Higgins earned her eighth double double on the season with 16 points and 13 rebounds in 35 minutes of work. 
  • McDavid came alive in Moraga with a team-high 20 points on 9-of-17 shooting and 2-of-4 from the free throw line to earn City of Stockton Human Resources Hardworking Player of the Game honors.
  • Tryggedsson poured in a season-high 17 points on 5-of-16 shooting with all five makes coming from downtown to set a new season high.
UP NEXT: 
  • Pacific finishes its three-game road trip next weekend with the start of the second go-around of West Coast Conference play, traveling to Pepperdine and Loyola Marymount.
