Tigers Defeat San Jose State, 16-11 in 2019 Opener

STOCKTON, Calif. – The Pacific men's water polo team opened its 2019 campaign with a 16-11 victory against San Jose State at Chris Kjeldsen Pool on Saturday afternoon. 

The win was one of three total victories the Tigers earned at the 2019 Pacific Invitational. Pacific snagged exhibition wins over Santa Clara (13-8) and Cuesta College (21-10).


In Case You Missed It

  • The Orange and Black shot .485 as a team and was 3-3 in penalty shots.
  • The Tigers out-shot the Spartans 33-29.
     

First Period

  • Pacific was on the board first, following a shot to the post by SJSU, Luke Pavillard scored his first goal of the season at 7:08.
  • Within the next minute the Spartans scored consecutive goals to take a 2-1 lead. 
  • Jeremie Cote, on a feed from Djordje Stanic, evened the score at 2-2 (5:52).
  • The lead continued to jump back and forth after the Tigers and Spartans each scored their third goal of the game at 4:40 and 3:46, respectively.
  • Following a Pacific timeout at 2:56, the Tigers scored four unanswered goals to wrap up the first period with a 7-3 lead.
     

Second Period

  • Pavillard secured his first hat trick of 2019 with a goal scored just 16 seconds into the second period.
  • Both keepers came up big, combining for six saves. Pacific sophomore Jon Barry totaled four in the period.
  • After taking an 11-4 lead, San Jose State scored three times in the final four minutes to remain within four goals of the Tigers.


Third Period

  • Nearly four minutes passed before either team had any action in goal. At 5:22 San Jose State's Adam Bado committed a penalty foul that resulted in a Cote goal. 
  • The Spartans remained in striking distance, scoring consecutive goals at 3:43 and 2:24.
  • With just six seconds remaining in the Period, Pavillard extended the Tigers lead to 14-9. 
     

Fourth Period

  • Both teams scored two goals in the final period. Pacific's Matthew Hosmer was the first to strike on an assist by Stanic at 6:15.
  • Engin Ege Colak scored the final goal for the Tigers with just 2:22 remaining on the clock.

     

Notables

  • Pavillard and Cote each totaled team-highs of five points and four goals in the match.
  • Stanic assisted on four of the Tigers goals, totaling four points on the day. Luis Araya also collected four points after scoring two goals and dishing out two assists.
  • Barry finished with seven saves on the afternoon.

     

Up Next For the Tigers
Pacific will return to the pool for competition on Sunday, Sept. 15 for its match at Cal. That contest is scheduled for a 1:00 p.m.
