LOS ANGELES, Calif. – The Pacific men's water polo team finished 1-1 on the second day of the Loyola Marymount/UCLA-hosted SoCal Invitational.
The Tigers (8-1) opened the day with a 16-15 afternoon victory over No. 5 USC before falling in the nightcap to No. 3 Stanford by a score of 15-14.
PACIFIC vs. #5 USC
- The Tigers out-scored USC in the first (5-4) and third (5-3) periods.
- It was a seesaw battle between the Tigers and Trojans with neither team holding larger than a four-goal lead throughout the contest.
- Jeremie Cote led the offensive charge for Pacific, scoring five goals on eight shots and dishing out an assists for a total of six points. Engin Ege Colak and Pavillard each contributed four goals in the match.
- Luis Araya and Djordje Stanic each dished out a game-high three assists.
- As a team, Pacific scored on 16 of 32 shots, cashed in on five of seven power plays.
1st Period
- USC scored two quick goals at 7:49 and 7:18.
- Freshman Jeremie Cote gave the Tigers their first goal at 6:48. The Tigers then went on a 4-2 run.
2nd Period
- The two squads nearly matched point for point in the second period, but a USC goal in the final minute of the first half knotted the game at 8-8.
3rd Period
- The Trojans took the first lead of the second half, but Pacific answered back with goals at 6:39 and 6:04 to regain the lead (10-9).
- Pacific closed out the third period with a 3-2 scoring run.
4th Period
- Heading into the fourth period Pacific led USC, 13-11, but Pacific quickly extended its lead on goals by Luke Pavillard and Bodgan Djerkovic at 6:32 and 5:46, respectively.
- In the final five minutes of play USC held the Tigers to just one goal, while scoring four to finish just one goal short of the Tigers.
PACIFIC vs. #3 STANFORD
- The Tigers drew 13 Stanford exclusions en route to scoring on five-of-10 powerplays.
- Hosmer led the Tigers scoring with four goals, followed by Pavillard with three goals.
1st Period
- Pacific jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead following goals by freshmen Matthew Hosmer (7:15) and Jeremie Cote (5:12).
- Stanford answered back with consecutive goals to knot the game at 2-2. The Cardinal went on to out-score the Tigers 3-2 to close out the first period with a 5-4 edge.
2nd Period
- After winning the sprint to open the second period, Pacific evened the score with a goal by Engin Ege Colak (7:44).
- Following a 6-6 tied in the second, Stanford took a two-goal lead despite being out-shot by the Tigers, 5-4.
- Luis Araya scored the final Tigers goal in the second period at the 2:17 mark, while Pacific's defense came up huge with two saves by keeper Jon Barry and a blocked shot by Pavillard.
3rd Period
- Throughout the third period Pacific battled from behind to tie the game up at 8-8, 10-10, and 12-12.
4th Period
- Nearly half of the final period passed before either team found the back of the net. With just three total shots taken in the fourth, Stanford scored consecutive goals at 4:55 and 4:17 to take another two-goal lead on the Tigers.
- The Tigers kicked into high gear in the final four minutes of play, out-shooting the Cardinal 3-1, while also forcing three Stanford turnovers.
- It seemed as though the Tigers were out of contention for the victory after a Stanford goal (15-12) with just 1:14 left to play.
- Coming out of a full timeout, Pacific drew consecutive penalty shots. Hosmer and Pavillard each scored on a penalty shot to put the Tigers back within one goal with just under 30 seconds remaining in regulation.
- Stanford would hold on for the 15-14 win.
OVERALL LEADERS
- Cote and Pavillard each scored a team-high seven goals on the day. In addition, Cote dished out four assists for a total of team-leading 11 points.
- Hosmer scored on five of six goals for an .833 shooting percentage.
- Pacific keeper Barry collected 21 saves, including a 13 save effort in the Tigers win over USC.
