MORAGA, Calif. – The Pacific women's volleyball team claimed its first West Coast Conference (WCC) win with a five-set (17-25, 25-22, 25-21, 22-25, 15-11) over Saint Mary's at McKeon Pavilion on Friday night.
The Tigers have won seven of their last eight matches to improve to 9-4 on the season and are now 1-0 in WCC play. The Gaels fall to 4-7.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT
- Pacific improved to 4-0 in five-set matches this season.
- As a team the Tigers hit exceptionally in the second (.343) and fifth (.421) sets.
- The Tigers held the edge in points (86-73), kills (71-58), service aces (8-2), assists (67-54), and digs (75-67).
STATISTICALLY SPEAKING
- Riley Patterson led all players with 24 points and 23 kills. In addition, she finished second on the Tigers team with 13 digs on the night.
- Pacific's middle blockers — Kaelyn Saler (4-0-10) and Sedona Sherman (8-1-16) — combined for a .423 hitting percentage.
- In her first appearance since Aug. 30, Riley Ramsey hit .324 (15-3-37).
- Allison Dennemann rounded out the double-digit scoring, also with 15 kills against the Gaels.
- Libero Jadyn Tubbs had a match-high 23 digs.
- Hanne De Schrijver dished out 34 assists, while totaling 11 digs and four service aces. Fellow setter, Gabby Leo totaled 22 assists, 12 digs, and three service aces.
Set 1
- The Tigers were in a seesaw battle through the first 16 serves, but following an 8-8 tie the Gaels went on a 10-2 run to take an 18-10 lead.
- Pacific answered with a 3-0 run to come back within five points (18-13).
- Saint Mary's secured the 25-17 win with a final 7-4 run.
Set 2
- Pacific jumped to a quick 4-1 lead to open the second set, but the lead was short lived as Saint Mary's won three consecutive points to knot the score at 4-4.
- Following a 7-7 tie Pacific out-scored the Gaels 8-5 to the its largest lead of the set (15-12).
- SMC then went on a 5-2 run that tied the game again at 17-17.
- The Score was tied between the two squads three more times (18-18, 19-19, 20-20).
- It looked as though the Tigers were gong to put the set away, but with a 24-20 lead the Gaels won consecutive points to come back within two points (24-22).
- A kill by Dennemann at set point secured the victory for the Tigers.
Set 3
- In another back-and-forth battle, the two squads were tied at points 1, 2, and 8 before the Tigers took their final lead.
- Following a service error by Saint Mary's at 2-2, Pacific went on a 4-0 run to take a 6-2 lead.
- Pacific did not hold a larger lead than three points until consecutive kills by Dennemann and Patterson put the Tigers up 16-12.
- Riley Ramsey and Kennedy Kaminsky came up with a big block at 23-16, but Saint Mary's answered with three straight points to force the Tigers to take a late timeout.
- Patterson earned the Tigers final two points on kills at 24-19 and 25-21.
Set 4
- Saint Mary's came out strong in the first half of the set, holding a lead until kills by Sherman, Dennemann, and a service ace by De Schrijver tied the game up at 16-16.
- Tigers took their first lead of the set at 17-16, but Saint Mary's would regain control at 18-17 following a Pacific service error and attack error.
- Pacific battled back to a 20-20 tie. Saint Mary's went on to out-score the Tigers 5-2 to force a deciding set.
Set 5
- Pacific opened the fifth set with a 5-1 scoring run. That run included kills by Patterson (2) and Ramsey (1).
- Consecutive kills by SMC's Elena Baka put the Gaels back within two points (5-3).
- Patterson and Kaminsky extended the Tigers lead back to four (7-3).
- Pacific switched ends of the court with an 8-5 lead and immediately took a 9-5 lead following an attack error by the Gaels.
- A 4-2 run by the Tigers nearly sealed them the match victory, but at match point (14-8) SMC won three consecutive points (14-11).
- Ramsey closed the door on the match with a final kill at 15-11.
