Pacific Edges San Jose State, 14-12

DAVIS, Calif. – The Pacific men's water polo team extended its win streak to six, following a narrow 14-12 win against San Jose State on Sunday at the UC Davis-hosted Aggie Invitational.

The Tigers improve their record against San Jose State to 2-0 en route to an overall record of 6-0.

 

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT

  • Pacific led the scoring in the first two periods, but only by one goal in each of the periods.
  • The two squads each scored six goals in the second half.
  • The Orange and Black scored on seven of 16 power plays.
  • The Tigers held the edge in shots (32-29) and shooting percentage (.438-.414)
     

1st Period

  • Pacific All-American Luke Pavillard won the sprint for the Tigers to open the game, but the Tigers were unable to convert to a score and toss the ball away on the first possesion.
  • One the Tigers regained possession, Pavillard was able to score his first of four goals on the day, following a feed by Djordje Stanic at 6:48.
  • Each team took two shots before the Spartans evened the score at 1-1.
  • The Tigers had three-consecutive shots on goal, but SJSU keeper Yahav Fire recorded three saves before giving his team the opportunity to gain the lead at 3:19.
  • Luis Araya had an opportunity to bring the Tigers and Spartans back to even with a penalty shot, but SJSU came up with another save.
  • With just under three minutes left to play, Jeremie Cote scored an unassisted goal to knot the game at 2-2.
  • With under 30 seconds left to play in the period, Wyatt Barker came up with a steal, which Andrea De Nardi converted for a the final goal of the period.
  • Tigers led at the end of the 1st, 3-2.
     

2nd Period

  • After winning the sprint again, Tigers' Stanic took a shot at extending Pacific's lead, but his shot was blocked by SJSU's Finn Pardon.
  • Immediately after the blocked shot, San Jose State evened the score at 3-3.
  • Then on a powerplay at 6:16, Stanic finished on his shot, taking the lead for the Tigers (4-3).
  • Less than a minute latter Eli Lule stole the ball and Pavillard extended Pacific's lead to 5-4.
  • San Jose State evened the score once again with consecutive goals at 5:17 and 4:47. 
  • Following a 6-6 tie, Pacific's Engin Ege Colak and Cote scored unanswered goals.
  • Pacific held on for the 8-6 lead, heading into halftime.
     

3rd Period

  • The Spartans were the first on the board in the second half, scoring two goals within a minute, 30 seconds to tie the game up at 8-8.
  • SJSU continued it scoring run, taking the lead at 9-8, but Pacific retook control with two of its own goals (10-9).
  • The Tigers defense came up big to hold the lead, with De Nardi and Cote blocking two of the Spartans shots. 
  • In the remaining 3:00 minutes Pacific out-scored San Jose State 2-1 to enter the final period with a 12-10 lead.
     

4th Period

  • The Tigers and Spartans each only completed on two shots in the final period.
  • SJSU scored its first goal on a penalty shot (12-11).
  • Pacific regained its two-goal edge just 12 seconds later with a goal by Pavillard at 5:58.
  • With just 2:23 to play, San Jose State put some pressure on with a goal, but Pacific answered back with one final goal (14-12).

     

TOP PERFORMERS

  • Pavillard and Cote each scored a team-leading four goals. Pavillard also had two assists to total a team-high six points on the day. Cote totaled five points.
  • Stanic dished out three assists and scored one goal for four point points.
  • Defensively, Wyatt Barker, Aiden Jang, and De Nardi each had two steals against the Spartans.
  • Jon Barry had five saves in goal.
