Pacific Splits on Day One of Bulldog Brawl

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. – The Pacific women's volleyball team finished 1-1 on day one of the Bulldog Brawl, following a 3-1 loss to Illinois and a 3-2 victory over tournament-host Butler on Friday.

Illinois 3, Pacific 1

  • Opening against a very tough Illinois squad, the Tigers took the first set by a score of 25-19. 
  • In the first set Illinois was held to just eight kills.
  • The remaining three sets went to the Fighting Illini easily, claiming set wins of 25-12, 25-17, and 25-14.
  • Pacific was led by Riley Patterson with 18 kills, while Allison Dennemann totaled 13 kills in the match. 
  • Defensively, Jadyn Tubbs collected a team-high 15 digs.

     

Pacific 3, Butler 2

Set 1

  • For the second-consecutive match the Tigers claimed the first set, defeating Butler 25-22.
  • Butler took the lead first, opening with a 5-2 run, but Pacific answered back and scored nine-straight points (11-5).
  • The Tigers extended its lead to as much as seven points (13-6).
  • Butler then went on a 5-0 run to come back within two points of the Tigers.
  • The two squads nearly matched point for point until a 17-16 lead in favor of the Tigers began a 3-0 Pacific run that put it up 20-17.
  • The Tigers final three points were decided on on serves, as they took advantage of two Bulldog service errors and a service ace by Allison Dennemann.
     

Set 2

  • Butler had a convincing second-set win despite the Tigers out-hitting the Bulldogs 0.143 - 0.128.
  • The score was tied three times before either team had seven points on the board. 
  • In a seesaw battle, the Bulldogs eventually took and extensive lead following an 11-10 lead. Butler won 12 of the following 14 serves for a 23-12 edge.
  • Despite the Tigers winning four of the next six points Butler easily took the set, 25-16.
     

Set 3

  • Set three looked nearly identical to the second set, only the Tigers finished ahead. 
  • Pacific won the set 25-15 despite Butler finishing .500 (13-1-24). The Tigers totaled 15 kills and committed six errors in 36 total swings for a .250 hitting percentage.
  • Neither team had a longer run than three-straight points until the Tigers went on a 6-0 run at point 15 to give them a 20-12 lead over the Bulldogs.
  • The Tigers finished off the set with a 5-3 run.
     

Set 4

  • The fourth set was the most competitive yet, with the Butler edging the Tigers, 25-23 to force a fifth and deciding set. 
  • Pacific and Butler were tied at points 1, 3, 4, and six. Following a 7-6 Tiger edge, the Bulldogs won five straight points to take an 11-7 lead.
  • Both squads each won six points over the next 12 serves and with a 17-11 deficit Pacific battled back within two points (17-15).
  • Butler went up 22-16 before the Tigers had a 7-2 run that put them back within one point (25-24).
  • The Bulldogs put the set away on a Kill by Brooke Gregory.
     

Set 5

  • Pacific has won all three five-set contests this season. 
  • The Tigers jumped out to a 5-2 lead, but that was immediately erased by the Bulldogs as they tied the game up at 5-5.
  • Six of the next seven points went to the Tigers, giving Pacific an 11-6 edge. Butler answered back within two points (12-10) but a service ace and kills by Riley Patterson and Carissa Bradford secured the 15-10 win.

     

STATISTICALLY SPEAKING

  • Indiana native, Dennemann was stellar once again, matching her career high of 21 kills against Butler en route to a total of 33 kills on the day.
  • Patterson totaled 27 kills on the day, including her team-leading 18 against Illinois.
  • Kennedy Kaminsky was the Tigers' top hitter with a .243 percentage. 
  • Libero Tubbs totaled 35 digs.
