Tigers Win Two at Aggie Invitational

STOCKTON, Calif. – The Pacific women's volleyball team opened its 2019 season with quite a statement, defeating San Jose State (3-1) and Montana (3-0) on day-one of the UC Davis-hosted Aggie Invitational.

The Tigers (2-0) were led by Riley Patterson, who hit a whopping .452 (23-4-42). Middle blocker Kennedy Kaminsky also had a stellar debut with the indoor squad, hitting .424 (18-4-33) on the day. 


 

Pacific 3, San Jose State 1 

Set 1

  • Pacific struggled in the opening of the first set, falling to a quick 10-2 deficit. 
  • The two squads matched nearly point for point until a Tigers' 9-4 run brought them back within two points (20-18) of the Spartans. 
  • Pacific and San Jose had another seesaw battle until a San Jose State kill put the Spartans at set point (24-21).
  • With Kennedy Kaminsky back to serve, the Tigers won three consecutive points to take its first lead of the set (25-24). 
  • An attack error by the Spartans secured the set victory for the Tigers. 

Set 2

  • The Tigers took a quick lead, but the Spartans remained close, tying the game at 3-3, 4-4, 6-6, and 7-7.
  • Pacific would allow SJSU just five more points in the set, out scoring the Spartans 18-5 to finalize the win with a score of 25-12.

Set 3

  • After hitting just .080 in the second set, the Spartans hit .293 as a team en route to a set three win.
  • SJSU opened with a 14-10 run, which forced Pacific to take its first timeout of the set.
  • Following another Pacific timeout at 18-13, the Tigers went on a 5-1 run that put them back within two points (19-17). 
  • The score was tied at points 21 and 24 before a San Jose State kill and Pacific hitting error forced a fourth set.

Set 4

  • The final set was decided quickly, thanks to 11 San Jose State errors. 
  • Pacific took the match with a final set score of 25-13.


 

Pacific 3, Montana 0

Set 1

  • Pacific had complete control of the set, holding the Griz to just eight points. 
  • The Tigers opened with a 7-1 lead.
  • Montana came within six points at 9-3, but the game quickly slipped away and finished in favor of the Orange and Black.

Set 2

  • The score was tied four times before either team scored seven points. 
  • Following a 6-6 tie, the Griz took a 9-6 lead as a result of two Pacific errors and a kill by Montana's Kelly Horning.
  • Pacific answered with seven unanswered points to pull ahead of Montana (13-9).
  • The Tigers extended their lead to 21-15.
  • Montana had one last burst of momentum, going on a late 5-2 run, to bring the score back within two points (22-20).
  • Pacific held its lead and finished the set at 25-21.

Set 3

  • Following another seesaw start, Pacific and Montana tied the game at 6-6.
  • Pacific won the next four points.
  • The Griz were unable to come within less than three points for the remainder of the set and eventually fell by a score of 25-17.


 

Top Performances

  • Patterson and Riley Ramsey each smashed a team-high 23 kills on the day. In addition, Patterson recorded seven service aces.
  • Gabby Leo averaged 6.57 assists per set after totaling 20 and 26, respectively. 
  • Defensively, libero Jadyn Tubbs led with 34 digs and Kennedy Kaminsky had a team-best 14 blocks.
