Tigers Close Out 2019 Play at UC Irvine

STOCKTON, Calif. – Pacific men's basketball (12-3) will close out 2019 play on Saturday night when it takes on UC Irvine (7-7) at the Bren Event Center.

AGAINST UC IRVINE

  • Pacific leads the all-time series with UC Irvine, 42-39.
  • UC Irvine holds a 21-16 advantage over the Tigers at the Bren Event Center. 
  • Since rejoining the WCC in 2013-14, Pacific has compiled a 2-3 record against UC Irvine.
  • Nearly one year ago, Pacific downed UCI, 84-75, in overtime at the Alex G. Spanos Center. Senior Jahlil Tripp finished with 10 points and seven rebounds. 

     

LAST TIME OUT

  • Tigers are coming off of their seventh straight victory, dating back to Nov. 23, 2019.
  • Pacific led Idaho State for over 39 minutes en route to an 11-point (77-66) victory over the Bengals last Saturday night.
  • Tripp recorded his third double-double of the season with 21 points and 13 rebounds. 
  • Amari McCray nearly matched his career high in points, with 15 scored against the Bengals. In addition, the junior pulled down six rebounds and dished out a career-best four assists.
  • Freshman guard Daniss Jenkins is also coming off of a career night, shooting 4-for-5 from the field and 4-for-4 from the free throw line for a total of 12 points. 

     

THINGS TO KNOW ABOUT THE TIGERS

  • Pacific tops the WCC and is ranked fourth nationally in rebounding margin (11.2). The Tigers also lead the conference in scoring defense, holding their opponents to just 59.8 points per game.
  • Freshman point guard Pierre Crockrell II continues to command the Tigers offense with a stellar 3.9 assist/turnover ratio, which ranks first in the WCC, third among all Division I squads.  
  • The Tigers have out-rebounded their opponents in 11-of-12 contests this season and are 10-0 when leading at halftime.
  • Tripp, who averages a team-best 13.0 points per game, is just 117 points shy of 1,000 career points as a Tiger. 
  • Graduate transfer Gary Chivichyan has knocked down at least one three-pointer in each of the Tigers 15 games played. Chivichyan has averaged 2.8 in the month of December.

     

SCOUTING THE ANTEATERS

  • UCI has dropped its last two games, falling to UTEP (67-61) and UIC (76-67).
  • Sophomore Collin Welp comes off of the bench to lead the Anteaters with 13.8 points and 6.4 rebounds per game. 
  • Also averaging double figures in scoring are Eyassu Worku (11.9) and Tommy Rutherford  (10.1).
  • Austin Johnson is also making impacts off of the bench, averaging a team-best 1.5 blocks per game.
