STOCKTON, Calif. – The Pacific women's basketball team (1-0) defeated University of Missouri-Kansas City (1-1), 89-60, on Friday night at the Alex G. Spanos Center for their first-ever win in the Preseason WNIT tournament.

Playing in the renowned tournament for just the second time in school history, the Tigers caught fire in the second quarter to take the lead for good, cruising past the Roos for their first victory of the 2019-20 regular season.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:

  • With both teams trading baskets throughout the opening minutes, the score was knotted at 18 following the end of the first quarter.
  • Trailing the Roos by five at the 8:03 mark in the second period, UOP locked down on defense for the next 6:14, not allowing UMKC to score as the Tigers went on a 15-0 run to regain the lead, 35-25.
  • Playing in her first official game in the Orange and Black, redshirt senior Sofie Tryggedsson hit three consecutive shots from behind-the-arc in the final two minutes of the first half to keep Pacific out in front by double-digits.
  • Heading in the locker room, the Tigers led the Roos by twenty, 46-26. UOP was stout on the defensive end during the entire second quarter, using a 28-8 run to remain in front.
  • McDavid paced the offense with 16 points while Tryggedsson's four threes helped the Colorado State transfer tally 14 points at the break.

Second Half-
  • Aiming to keep their momentum rolling in the second half, UOP extended their lead to 25 at the 5:55 mark as sophomore Josephine Millard found redshirt junior Valerie Higgins in the post for her first points of the third quarter.
  • Returning from a year off after a successful mission trip, redshirt sophomore Savannah Whitehead netted her first points of the season on a layup at 3:54, keeping the Tigers in command, 56-33.
  • As the third period was winding down, junior Isabel Newman drilled back-to-back three pointers ahead by a wide margin. At the end of three, Pacific led UMKC, 67-45.
  • Dominating all night, McDavid kicked off the final quarter by scoring three points in the first minute to keep the Tigers out in front by 23.
  • Enjoying their home floor, all eligible players got minutes for UOP as freshmen Sam Ashby and Madelene Ennis each got on the court for the first time as Tigers. Additionally, redshirt freshman Cassidy Johnson notched her first collegiate bucket with 1:16 left in the contest, pushing Pacific's lead to 89-57.
  • Looking to move to the second round of the tournament, the Tigers closed out their victory by a final score of 89-60, defeating UMKC for the first time in program history while also earning their first-ever win in the Preseason WNIT.

NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • Following a stellar performance on opening night, McDavid was named the City of Stockton Human Resources Hardworking Player of the Game after tallying a final line of 26 points (game-high), 4 rebounds, 1 assist and 2 steals.
  • Coming in as the reigning WCC Defensive Player of the Year and a Preseason All-WCC Team selection, Higgins continued to impress with her versatile skillset as she poured in 17 points while also recording game highs in rebounds (7), assists (5) and steals (6).
  • Providing support all-around, Tryggedsson and Newman would each finish in double figures, notching 14 and 12 points respectively on a combined 8-12 from three-point range.
  • The Tigers capitalized immensely from points off UMKC turnovers, outscoring the Roos 36-6 in this category. Furthermore, Pacific's bigs dictated the flow of the game in the paint as UOP doubled the Roos output, 36-18.

WHAT COACH DAVIS SAID:

On strong second quarter: "That's when we really got going, and then it followed over into the second half, especially from three-point range. Honestly, a lot of that had to do with the fact that Brooklyn established herself inside, which started to open things up. The second thing that helped was our defensive intensity. We got some good transition looks and some mismatches out there that opened up our shots from distance."

On McDavid's impressive night: "It's important to establish something inside with what we are trying to do offensively, and with her doing what she does, it only makes things easier for everybody else."

WHAT'S NEXT:
Pacific will move on to the second round of the Preseason WNIT tournament and will resume play on Monday, Nov. 11. The Tigers are currently awaiting their opponent and location of the game as they will face the winner of Saturday's Oregon State/UC Irvine matchup.
