Pacific Cruises Past Weber State on Education Day

STOCKTON, Calif. – Looking to win their second straight contest, the Pacific women's basketball team (3-1) cruised past Weber State (0-4), 76-53, on Thursday afternoon.

Celebrating their 5th Annual Education at the Alex G. Spanos Center, the Tigers used a 22-1 run in the second quarter to come back from early struggles, ultimately finding their rhythm on offense as they breezed by the Wildcats to win by 23.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:

First Half-
  • Coming into the game third in the nation in scoring with an average of 25.7 points per game, junior Brooklyn McDavid started hot yet again, recording the game's first two points at 9:26 in the first quarter. The Studio City native has tallied the first two points for Pacific in all four games this season.
  • Not able to find any more momentum out of the gates, the Tigers faced an early nine-point deficit midway through the opening period, not hitting their second shot of the game until a Lianna Tillman three at 5:12.
  • Unable to figure out chemistry on the court, Pacific trailed Weber State, 22-9, after the first quarter of play.
  • Following a few Wildcat baskets to open the second quarter, Pacific locked down on defense for the remainder of the period, using a 22-1 run to regain the lead and close out the half on top of Weber State, 36-30.
  • Flipping the script and catching fire, redshirt senior Sofie Tryggedsson scored 12 of her 17 points in UOP's run in the second, knocking down three shots from behind-the-arc as the Tigers dominated the Wildcats on the scoreboard in the second quarter, 27-8.

Second Half-
  • Firing on all cylinders, sophomore Kaylin Randhawa netted her first two points of the game on a beautiful assist from senior Jessica Blakeslee at 9:36 in the third quarter.
  • Continuing to apply pressure on the Wildcats, the Tigers held Weber State to just 8 points for the second straight period, outscoring their opponents 17-8 in the third.
  • Heading into the final frame, Pacific was in command and out in front of the Wildcats, leading 53-38.
  • Kicking off the final quarter in style, Tillman extended the lead to 17 on a layup in the paint at 9:41 in the fourth.
  • Finding their grove on the offensive end, McDavid and Tillman continued to torch the Weber State defense as Pacific increased their lead over the Wildcats to 27 with 7:18 remaining in the contest.
  • Welcoming over 2,000 students from 25 local schools, the Tigers capped off Education Day by defeating Weber State, 76-53.
NOTABLE PERFORMANCES:
  • Tryggedsson was named the City of Stockton Human Resources Hardworking Player of the Game after registering a new season-high with 17 points in the win. The Colorado State transfer also pulled down seven rebounds and dished out two assists while shooting 50% from the field for the Tigers.
  • Scoring in double figures for the fourth consecutive game, McDavid tallied a game-high 19 points while also adding seven rebounds, three steals, one assist and one block.
  • Coming up clutch for the Tigers when called upon, Tillman notched her first double-digit performance of the season by pouring in 15 points and 6-14 shooting. The Stockton native also recorded three rebounds, three steals, one assist and one block for Pacific in the victory.

WHAT COACH DAVIS SAID:
On early struggles: "We weren't playing with much intensity or much effort, but we have to give Weber State credit for starting with the intensity that they did. They made shots, but we just felt like we weren't playing our best game of basketball. Once we picked up on the defensive end, that really kind of fueled everything, especially our overall game intensity."

On team's defensive effort: "We've done a couple good things defensively the past few games, and we felt like part of the game plan for us would be to create some turnovers on the defensive end, which would ultimately create some easy offense. Once we started doing that, it kind of picked everything up from there.

On the next week of preparation: "It's simple, just about consistency. We have to start off with a high level of intensity and execution, maintaining that no matter who is in the game or what the time or score is."

UP NEXT:
Pacific will continue their homestand when they host Indiana State on Friday, Nov. 29 at 2:00 pm. This matchup will mark the team's first game of the Tiger Turkey Tip-Off as UOP. Spanos Center. Video, audio and live stats of both contests will be available on pacifictigers.com.
