STOCKTON, Calif. – Despite a valiant effort, the Pacific women's volleyball team dropped its West Coast Conference home opener in straight sets (25-19, 25-17, 26-24) to No. 9-ranked BYU on Thursday night at the Alex G. Spanos Center.
The Tigers fall to 10-5 overall, 2-1 in WCC play, while the Cougars improve to 13-2, 4-0 in conference play.
IN CASE YOU MISSED IT
- Pacific hit .157 as a team, while BYU hit .317 as a team.
- The Tigers held the edge in kills (44-38), assists (41-33), digs (46-37), while the Cougars out-blocked the Orange and Black 9-3.
1st Set
- Carissa Bradford put the Tigers on the board with a kill to open the match.
- BYU went up by as many as four points before either team scored 10 points, but following a 9-5 deficit Pacific went on a 3-0 run to come back within one point of the Cougars (9-8).
- Pacific would remain within four points of BYU for the remainder of the set. Following a kill by Bradford at 21-19, the Tigers were unable to score another point and dropped the set, 25-19.
2nd Set
- It was a seesaw battle through the first 10 serves, but following a 5-5 tie the Cougars went on a 5-0 run to put some gap between them and the Tigers.
- Pacific would score on a kill by Allison Dennemann to come back within four, but BYU answered back by winning the next three points to extend its lead to seven.
- The Tigers never came back within less than six points and eventually lost the set by a score of 25-17.
3rd Set
- The Tigers would not go quietly ... the two squads were tied 11 times throughout the final set.
- Following a tie at 6-6, Pacific gained its largest lead to that point in the match, taking the next three points on consecutive kills by Riley Patterson and a service ace by Jadyn Tubbs.
- Though slight, Pacific held its lead until a 5-3 run by the Cougars at 15-13 tied the game at 18-18.
- BYU fell below the Tigers once again and took just its second lead of the game after a Cougar block and a Pacific hitting error led to its 22-21 lead.
- The game was tied at points 22, 23, and 24 before the Cougars finished off the match with a kill by their hitting leader McKenna Miller.
STATISTICALLY SPEAKING
- Kennedy Kaminsky hit a team-leading .545 after totaling six kills in 11 attempts without committing an error.
- Freshman Carissa Bradford had an outstanding match, hitting .368 from the outside. Bradford totaled nine kills on the night.
- Patterson, along with BYU's Miller, led all players with 13 kills, while Dennemann totaled 10 kills and 11 digs.
- Gabby Leo and Hanne De Schrijver split time at setter, dishing out 18 assists and 13 assists, respectively.
- Tubbs led both teams with 15 digs.
UP NEXT
The Tigers will wrap up their three-game week with a home contest against the University of San Diego on Saturday afternoon. First serve is set for 12:00 p.m. Following the contest will be an autograph session with the 2019 squad.
