Tigers Drop OT Heartbreaker to LMU

STOCKTON, Calif.- The Pacific men's soccer team (4-8-1, 1-2-0) fell to Loyola Marymount (8-4-3, 3-0-0), 2-1, in overtime on Saturday night at Knoles Field.

Although the Lions scored first late in the second half to take the lead, senior Andreas Charalambous found the equalizer just a few minutes later as the Tigers evened the score at one with 16 minutes remaining in regulation. Unfortunately, LMU netted the game-winner in the 97th minute to secure the victory.

IN CASE YOU MISSED IT:
  • Aiming to get back in the win column, the Tigers came out of the gates firing as Charalambous tallied the first shot of the match at the 2:11 mark.
  • Looking to use the home crowd to their advantage, Pacific traded shots with LMU throughout the first half, but ultimately was unable to find momentum on the offensive end. However, UOP would outshoot the Lions, 5-4, in the first 45 minutes.
  • Steady defense by both teams kept the match tied at 0 heading into the halftime break. Charalambous and sophomore Mamoru Kamisasanuki each finished with two shots in the first half while senior Anthony Orendain added one shot himself for the Tigers.
  • Coming out of the locker room, LMU immediately attacked the Pacific defense, scoring on a goal from Alex Liu at 49:23 to make the score 1-0 in favor of the Lions.
  • Despite additional shots from Tariq Branche and Orendain, Pacific could not find their groove on offense until the 74thminute. Coming up clutch for the Tigers, Charalambous netted his second goal of the year on a penalty kick at 73:32 to even the match at one.
  • Just like the first half, both teams continued to exchange shots as the clock ticked down, but neither were able to find the back of the net before the end of regulation. After the first 90 minutes, the match was tied at one heading into the first overtime period.
  • Wasting little time, LMU scored the game-winning goal in the 97th minute. Sadly, Pacific was defeated by a final score of 2-1.
  • Charalambous led the Tiger attack with three shots on the night, followed by two shots each from Kamisasanuki and Orendain. Branche would also tally one shot in the loss to the Lions.
  • Junior Ethan Bandre held the advantage over LMU's Alfredo Cortez in overall saves, racking up five total in the match to Cortez's one.

UP NEXT: Pacific will hit the road next for another conference matchup as the Tigers will travel to Moraga to face Saint Mary's on Wednesday, Oct. 30 at 3:00 pm. UOP will return home to Knoles Field on Saturday, Nov. 2 when they host San Diego at 7:00 pm for Military Appreciation Night.
