Tigers Edged by Lions, 79-77

STOCKTON, Calif. – The Pacific women's basketball team dropped its final West Coast Conference contest against Loyola Marymount on Saturday afternoon by a score of 79-77.

The Tigers will enter postseason play with an overall record of 13-16. Their 7-11 conference mark earns them the No. 7 seed in the 2018 WCC Tournament, which is slated for March 1-5 at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas. 

Pacific will face the No. 10 seed Portland on Thursday, March 1 at 2:00 pm. Their game will follow the No. 8 Pepperdine/No. 9 Santa Clara matchup at 12:00 pm. This season the Tigers and Pilots each snagged a lopsided victory, Pacific with a 91-55 win at home and a 67-89 loss on the road.

In case you missed it

  • The first quarter was tied four times and had three lead changes, but the Lions finished with a 20-19 edge. GeAnna Luaulu-Summers led all players in the first quarter with eight points en route to her 26th double-double of the season. Luaulu finished with 13 points on 3-for-11 shooting from the field and a 6-for-9 effort from the charity stripe.
  • In the second quarter, both teams struggled to find score points which made for another competitive 10 minutes of play. The Tigers, led by Desire Finnie, shot 28.5% from the field and the Lions were just 33.3% from the field in the quarter.
  • Pacific shot 4-for-7 from beyond the arc, while holding the Lions to just one made three pointer in the third quarter,. Jessica Blakeslee went 2-for-2, while Janelle Grant and Finnie each knocked down a shot from the outside.
  • The game was tied seven more times in the final 10 minutes of play with possession alternating five times. Tigers took a one point lead with 3:02 remaining following a made three pointer by Finnie. Pacific would tied it up a Brooklyn McDavid jumper and a 1-for-2 free throw effort by Finnie, but LMU's Bree Alford scored the winning two points (79-77) on a put-back with one second remaining.
  • Offensively, the Tigers and Lions matched up nicely, holding the edge in assists (15-14) and each totaling one block. Defensively, Pacific was out-rebounded 40-29 and allowed the Loyola eight steals on the day.


Things to know

  • Seniors' GeAnna Luaulu-Summers and Desire Finnie were recognized prior to Saturday's game for their time with the women's basketball program. Both players are in their final season with the Tigers.
  • Finnie was tabbed the City of Stockton Hardworking Player of the Game after scoring a team-high 19 points on 6-for-14 shooting from the floor and a perfect 5-for-5 from the free throw line. She also totaled three rebounds and three assists.
  • The women's basketball program also recognized its alumni Saturday, recognizing a group of former Tigers at halftime, followed by an alumni event, which took place at the Vereschagin Alumni House on campus.
