Tigers Complete Comeback to Take 2-1 Victory Over JMU

Box Score

HARRISONBURG, Virginia - Goals in the 61st and 85th minutes helped the Pacific men's soccer team come back against James Madison (2-1-1) on Sunday evening for a thrilling 2-1 victory over the Dukes. Andres Ochoa and Wouter Verstraaten both scored in the decision as Pacific improves to 4-0 on the year.

Both sides traded scoring chances early on, with Bob Groenendijk bringing the ball up in the eleventh minute and ripping a shot towards the far post that just went wide. James Madison got on the board first in the 19th minute on a goal off the foot of Joe Vyner, marking the first time all season the Tigers have trailed in a match. Pacific would outshoot the Dukes 6-4 in the fist 45 minutes, and both goalies making a pair of saves.

Three minutes into the second half Pacific took a corner kick in which the ricochet found Tariq Branche about ten yards beyond the top of the box. Branche dribbled once and ripped a shot towards the right post that required a great diving stop by the Duke goalie.

Pacific tied it up in the 61st minute as Andres Ochoa intercepted the ball and promptly fired a shot past the 'keeper from outside the box towards the far post to make it 1-1. The Orange and Black completed the comeback in the closing minutes when Wouter Verstraaten made a misplay by the Duke goalie count as he punched it in from near the front of the goal to give the Tigers a 2-1 lead in the 85th.

The defense did the rest in the final five minutes to secure the victory. Curtis Goldsmith made one save on eleven total shots faced to notch another win on the young season. Pacific registered 12 total shots in the contest, with Tristan Blackmon leading the pack with four.

The road trip caps off next Friday at UNLV, with kickoff slated for 7 PM. The Tigers return home on Sept. 10th at 7 PM against Grand Canyon.
