Women's Hoops Falls At LMU In Finale

Box Score

LOS ANGELES - The Pacific women's basketball team saw Loyola Marymount pull away late for a 75-65 win Saturday at Gersten Pavilion in the West Coast Conference regular season finale.

GeAnna Luaulu-Summers led the Tigers with 14 points and seven rebounds, while Desire Finnie added 13 points. Chelsea Lidy chipped in 12 points and Mauriana Clayton posted a career-best 13 rebounds. Jenelle Grant added seven points and four rebounds.

But Pacific connected on just 2-of-20 from three-point range in the contest, short of the Tigers' usual eight made threes per game.

The game featured seven ties and 12 lead changes, but a 9-2 run with seven minutes left in the fourth gave the Lions breathing room and the Tigers' attempts to cut into the deficit from the three-point arc went awry.

LMU shot 46 percent from the field, while the Tigers shot 30.4 percent (21-of-69). The Tigers hit 20-of-25 free throws, while LMU converted 13-of-19 from the free throw line.

The Tigers and Lions each posted 43 rebounds, with Pacific owning a 14-4 edge in second chance points.

Pacific wraps the regular season at 5-13 in the WCC, and 9-20 overall. Loyola Marymount improves to 14-15 overall and 9-9 in WCC play.

LMU opened with a 6-2 lead before Jenelle Grant drained a three-pointer and Finnie added a lay-up. Aimonetti posted a three-pointer for the Lions before a Finnie jumper cut the gap to 11-9. Grant and Luaulu-Summers added buckets to tie the game at 13-13, but Andee Velasco answered with a three-pointer for the Lions. After a pair of Ameela Li free throws, the Tigers picked up a steal and Finnie finished for a 17-16 Pacific lead with 2:01 to go in the first. But LMU answered back with six points to lead 22-17 at the end of the quarter.

The Tigers held LMU without a field goal for 4:44 of the second quarter and pulled within 28-25 on a jumper from Lidy. Luaulu-Summers hit a pair of free throws, and Lidy and Luaulu-Summers hit back-to-back jumpers for a 31-29 lead. The Lions pounced back, taking a 35-31 lead on six-straight points before Lidy posted another lay-up. Li answered a free throw with a jumper as the Lions led 36-35 at halftime.

Luaulu-Summers opened the third with a lay-up in transition for a 37-36 Pacific lead. Emily Simons answered a layup from Cheyanne Wallace with an inside bucket and Mauriana Clayton put the Tigers up 41-40. Finnie gave Pacific a 45-44 lead from the free throw line, but the Lions slipped in front 51-47 on back-to-back lay-ups. Finnie hit a pair of free throws, but Leslie Lopez-Wood drained a three for a 54-51 LMU lead after three quarters.

In the fourth, the Tigers pulled back within one on a Lidy lay-in, but Lopez-Wood struck again for 61-55 advantage. Simons added a jumper, but Jackie Johnson converted an and-one as the Lions led 65-57 with 4:51 to go. Lidy cut the gap to 66-60 with 3:37 to play. Lopez-Wood connected on a long jumper for a 70-61 LMU lead with 2:10 to play.

Luaulu-Summers connected on a three-pointer, just the Tigers' second of the game after opening 1-of-14 from deep, to cut the margin to six. But Velasco hit a runner with the shot clock dwindling and the Tigers missed three attempts on three-pointers and the Lions closed out the game.

The Tigers will face Pepperdine in the first round of the West Coast Conference Championship in Las Vegas, on Thursday.
