STANFORD, Calif. – Former Pacific women's volleyball coach John Dunning, who guided the Tigers to back-to-back national championships in 1985 and 1986 as part of a 32-year collegiate coaching career, announced his retirement Monday.
Dunning won two national championships and spent 16 seasons with the Tigers from 1985-2000 before moving on to Stanford, where he won three more titles, including the 2016 championship.
During his time in Stockton, Dunning compiled an impressive 437-102 overall record, was named Big West Conference (Big West) Coach of the Year four times and led the Tigers to two NCAA championships, an NCAA runner-up finish, five Big West titles and 16 consecutive NCAA Tournament bids.
Over his 16 seasons, Dunning led his Tiger teams to a combined 43-15 record in postseason action, an unmatched 10-1 record in Big West Tournament play and a stellar 33-14 mark in the NCAA Tournament. Of the 16 squads coached by Dunning, 14 reached NCAA Regionals, advancing to the regional championship match seven times. Four of Dunning's squads reached the NCAA Final Four, including the two national championship teams, the 1990 national runner-up team and his 1999 squad.
During his 16 years with the Tigers, Dunning's players secured 49 All-America honors. In 2007, he was inducted into the Pacific Athletics Hall of Fame.
Dunning first stepped onto the Pacific campus in 1985 and guided the Tigers to a 36-3 record and national title in his first year as a collegiate head coach after defeating Stanford in three sets. For his efforts, Dunning was named the Volleyball Monthly National Coach of the Year.
In 1986, Dunning helped the Tigers repeat their landmark feat, as Pacific posted a 39-3 record after a three-game win over Nebraska in the title match. Dunning's pair of titles with the volleyball program remain the only two national championships in any sport in Pacific's history. After capturing an NCAA title with Stanford in his first season (2001), Dunning remains the only coach in the history of the sport to win a national championship in his first year at two different schools.
"John is one of the best and a great friend," Pacific athletic director Ted Leland said. Leland first served as the Pacific athletic director from 1989-91 before holding the same role at Stanford from 1991-2006. Leland, who lured Dunning to The Farm in 2001, rejoined the Tigers in 2006 and has served as athletic director since 2011.
Dunning directed Stanford to three national championships (2001, 2004, 2016) and eight conference titles during his 16-year tenure on The Farm. He boasts five national titles overall – which ranks as the second-most in NCAA Division I history, and was inducted into the American Volleyball Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2011.
In 32 seasons as a head coach, Dunning's teams never missed the postseason. He led 12 teams to the Final Four, including four Tiger squads. Dunning joins current Penn State coach Russ Rose as the only coaches in the history of the sport to guide 10 teams to the national championship match. Dunning finishes his career with an 888-185 overall record.
Dunning is a four-time national coach of the year, three-time regional coach of the year and seven-time conference coach of the year. He holds a 91-27 mark in NCAA Tournament play, winning 77.1 percent of his postseason matches. Throughout his illustrious career, Dunning has coached 38 All-Americans to 77 total honors and produced seven national players of the year.
