Box Score Stockton, Calif. – The Pacific Tigers overwhelmed the Sacramento State Hornets in their 9-6 win Tuesday, picking up seven runs in the first three innings as both Danny Mayer and Gio Brusa added to their homerun totals. It was the last non-conference game of the year for Pacific, as the Tigers finish needing to sweep Pepperdine to reach the WCC tournament.
For Pacific, Ricky Reynoso took the hill for his first Tuesday start of the year. He put together his third outing of seven or more runs as he picked up the win for the Tigers. Reynoso struck out seven in his seven innings, two off of his career high. The freshman didn't walk a single batter either, giving up all three runs charged to him via homeruns.
Vince Arobio only went a third of an inning but got the save as the Hornets began to threaten late in the ninth. It was his fifth save of the year.
Tanner Olson made his seventh start for Sacramento State and didn't last long at all as he was pulled during Pacific's five-run third inning. Olson was charged with six runs and gave up eight hits in his 2.2 innings, falling to 3-5 this year.
It only took two pitches for the Tigers to get on the bases. In just his second start batting leadoff, J.J. Wagner double down the third-base line into foul territory to start the first.
Brusa let Wagner walk home with a monstrous homerun that bounced off the brand-new Sac State lights in rightfield. The homerun was Brusa's 12th this year and the 23rd of his career, moving him into a tie for fourth in Pacific history with Mike Walker, a tie that would only last until the ninth inning tonight. The two-run shot also gave Brusa 118 career RBI, the sixth-most in school history. He is one of just eight Tigers ever with 100 runs and 100 RBI in his career.
Reynoso didn't run into trouble until a leadoff double in the second inning. The freshman didn't let the quick threat get to him and the runner was unable to advance, with Reynoso picking up his second and third strikeout as he coasted through the next three batters.
Mayer blasted a homerun of his own to start the third high off the parking garage beyond leftfield to make it 3-0. It was Mayer's 15th homer of the year, tying him with Matt Berezay and Vic Sanchez for the second-most in a single season by a Tiger. It was Mayer's 31st extra-base hit of the year, the most since Justin Baum had 34 in 2005.
After Brusa and Lucas Halstead singled, McKay Koissian drove in another run and ended Olson's night. Halstead's hit gave him an 11-game hitting streak, tied with Wagner for the second-longest of the year by a Tiger. Halstead is hitting .372 with five doubles, three homers, and nine RBI during his streak while Wagner is hitting .326 with ten runs and eight doubles.
Koissian, on the other hand, picked up his fourth RBI in his last six starts, all of which he has at least one hit in. Koissian is hitting .333 as a starter now after tonight's performance.
The pitching change made no difference as Miles Haddad knocked a soft single into the outfield to score another run. Haddad would score soon thereafter.
For the third time in his career and the first time since 2014, J.P. Yakel tripled, scoring two runs for the Tigers and making it 7-0 in the third inning. Yakel had his fifth multi-RBI game of the year thanks to that triple, giving him 17 RBI this season. The senior catcher is just two away from tying his career best in RBI, set in 2014.
Reynoso struck out his fourth man of the night in the bottom of the third but the Hornets finally drew blood with a solo homerun, making it 7-1. Reynoso got a flyout on the very next pitch he threw to end the inning and shake off any jitters the blast may have caused.
Another Mayer single started the fourth as Pacific sent every man to the plate the inning before. The junior dribbled it through the left side for the hit that just added more to his 19-game hitting streak and 32-game on-base streak. Mayer now has nine multi-hit games during the hitting streak and three in the last four.
Just a few pitches later, Brusa moved into a tie for second place in Pacific history with his 46th career double. Brusa hit the ball off the 375 sign in centerfield on a hit-and-run that allowed Mayer to score from first without a throw.
Reynoso picked up his fifth K starting the fifth inning, getting Sacramento State's Gunner Pollman swinging at a pitch in the dirt for the second time in the game. Another strikeout courtesy of Reynoso followed to give him his second career game with at least six Ks.
After the Tigers went down 1-2-3 in the sixth, including Brusa being retired for the first time in the game, Reynoso went right back to work. The freshman got his first looking strikeout of the game as he stretched his retired batter streak to ten in a row.
The Hornets broke Reynoso's perfect stretch with an odd single to start the seventh. Wagner dove quickly for the ball but it never got to him as it bounced straight up off of the third base bag. That would prove costly as the next hitter homered into the fourth floor of the parking garage beyond leftfield to make it 8-3. It was Sacramento State's second homer of the game after Reynoso had gone the previous four appearances without allowing one.
Bryce Lombardi was on the mound for the eighth in his 76th career appearance as a Tiger, the sixth-most by any Pacific pitcher. He only took three pitches to get his first strikeout of the game, then got a one-pitch groundout as he breezed through the Hornet hitters. It only took eight pitches for Lombardi to get through the eighth as he picked up two strikeouts and only threw one ball.
Brusa matched his career-high in RBI in a single game when he launched another ball into the stratosphere in the top of the ninth. Brusa has put up four four-RBI games in his career, with the first coming against Sacramento State in 2014. It was his third multi-homer game of the year and his first game with three extra-base hits. Pacific now has 39 homers this year, their most since 2005 and a total they have only surpassed twice in their history.
Sacramento State scored three runs in the bottom of the ninth with a series of singles. The Tigers nearly turned an around-the-horn triple play but couldn't quite get the relay to first in time. The Hornets scored all three of their ninth-inning runs after that before Arobio entered and got the last out of the game for the save.
With their home season over, Pacific will play one last series at Pepperdine next weekend with their chance at the WCC tournament on the line. The Pepperdine series begins with a 3:00 pm game on Friday. The Saturday and Sunday games against Pepperdine will each be at 1:00 pm.
