Women's Basketball Nipped In OT In Exhibition Opener

Stockton, Calif. - In a preseason tune-up, the Pacific women's basketball team fell in overtime, 80-76, to Chico State Sunday afternoon at the Alex G. Spanos Center. Desire Finnie led the Tigers with 18 points while Najah Queenland added 16 to go with nine rebounds.

GeAnna Luaulu-Summers added 13 points and five assists, and Eli Lopez Sagrera tallied eight points and nine rebounds. Jessica Blakeslee grabbed eight rebounds with two points and Emily Simons scored nine points.

Pacific registered 28 more shots than the Chico State as the Tigers forced 21 turnovers. But the Tigers shot 33 percent from the field on the afternoon, 20-of-89, while the Wildcats shot 39 percent (24-of-61). The Tigers also struggled from the free throw line, hitting 13-of-26 from the stripe.

The Tigers also out-rebounded the Wildcats, 60-49, including a 25-to-8 advantage in offensive rebounds, but Pacific only held a 14-13 advantage in second chance points.

Of Pacific's 21 turnovers and plus-seven turnover margin, the Tigers registered 14 steals while surrendering just two.

Whitney Branham led Chico State with 21 points, while McKena Barker and Jo Paine each added 11.

The first half featured six ties and eight lead changes, with the Wildcats opening to a 10-5 lead and leading for 7:34 to the Tigers' 18 seconds. The back and forth action continued through the second quarter, with Pacific leading for 5:18 to the Wildcats' 3:18, with Chico State taking a 34-32 lead into halftime.

In the third, Pacific trailed 47-40 with 4:42 to go, but held  hick State without a field goal over a 4:26 stretch as the Tigers used a 17-7 run to take a 52-49 lead. The Tigers led 52-51 after three quarters.

In the fourth, Chico State tied it up at 53-53 and then Madison Wong hit a trey to put the Wildcats up 56-53 with 7:41 to play. Simons hit Finnie on a backdoor cut to bring the Tigers within 58-57 and Finnie and Simons added lay-ins for a 6-0 run and a 61-58 Pacific lead with 4:29 to go.

Finnie connected on another jumper as the Tigers stretched the lead to seven at 65-58 before a three from Michelle Townsend. Branham added a triple for the Wildcats with 1:55 before Luaulu-Summers answered with a drive or a three-point lead.

Barker hit a jumper from the paint and after a stop by the Wildcats, Barker hit one-of-two from the free throw line. with 39 seconds left. Luaulu-Summers drove to the rim, but the ball deflected off her leg and out of bounds with 14 seconds left.

Finnie's runner at the buzzer rimmed out as we headed to overtime.

Lopez Sagrera connected on a lay-up in the paint and then added a pair of free throws for a four-point lead. The Wildcats responded with a bucket and a pair of throws to knot the game at 71-71 with 2:49 left in the extra session. Barker and Luaulu-Summers traded lay-ups before Paine finishing in the paint while being fouled, with the free throw putting the Wildcats up 76-73 with 1:05 to play.  Lopez Sagrera's jumper from the baseline rimmed out, and the Wildcats hit 2-of-2 from the line for a five-point lead with 33 seconds let.

Luaulu-Summers drained a triple with 27 seconds left, but Wong hit a pair of free throws for an 80-76 lead. The Tigers came up empty on the ensuing possession as the Wildcats held on.

Pacific will have a second tune up for the regular season on Friday, Nov. 4, at 11:00 a.m. on Education Day. The Tigers will open the regular season on the road on Nov. 11 at Pauley Pavilion against No. 9 UCLA.
