Tigers Drop The Finale At San Diego

Box Score

San Diego, Calif. - Trying to salvage the finale at Fowler Park, the Tigers could not get out of their own way as too many mistakes in the field gave the Toreros too many chances as San Diego took home a 12-3 victory over Pacific on Sunday in San Diego. The victory for the Toreros (21-13, 11-4 WCC) earned San Diego the three-game sweep over the Tigers (7-27, 5-10 WCC) who suffered their first sweep in conference play since joining the WCC last season.

Early on, things looked to be in good shape for the Tigers as for the first time on the weekend, Pacific took a lead against the Toreros with a run in the top of the first. In their first trip to the plate, the top of the lineup came up with the goods as Pacific picked up where it left off the night prior in its late game rally. With a pair of singles out of the Sullivan brothers molded around a sacrifice bunt, Pacific notched the first run of the game just three batters in. Shortstop Brett Sullivan nabbed his team-best 21st RBI with a single through the right side as it brought home Tyler Sullivan from second after the senior had led the game off with a flare to center and advanced on a sacrifice bunt.

Pitching with the lead, starter Michael Benson (2-2) was able to work a little magic in the bottom of the second when the senior pitched out of a bases loaded, no out, jam to keep San Diego off the scoreboard and hold on to his early lead. However, he would not be so lucky an inning later as another leadoff error set up a second scoring chance for the Toreros that they would cash in with the benefit of a very controversial call at first base. The call kept the inning alive for San Diego as the Toreros were able to grab a second run on a bases loaded walk to push in front of the Tigers through three.

Staying with it despite the sudden deficit, the Tigers were able to get the stolen run back in the top of the fifth as Pacific put together back-to-back knocks to claim another run in the game. After singling and stealing second, JJ Wagner came in to score the second run of the game for the Tigers when senior catcher Dallas Correa laced a shot the other way through the hole on the right side to plate the run. Pacific would put runners on the corners before all was said and done, but was unable to add any more to the run column.

The inability to take the lead in the top half of the inning immediately came back to haunt the Tigers as the Toreros struck for five runs in the bottom half of the frame to break the game wide open. Using a leadoff double and a third Tiger error, San Diego was able to snap the tie once again and reclaim the lead off of Benson. The added pitches due to the mistakes would end senior's day early as he departed with one out and two on in the fifth with senior Michael Hager coming into the game in relief. Unable to close the floodgates, Hager would allow both of Benson's inherited runners to come in to score as well as two of his own as San Diego broke the game open with five runs in the inning.

From there, chaos ensued as a bout of wildness by both sides and some extra-curricular fireworks allowed the Tigers to score a run in the seventh while the Toreros put together another five-run inning to put the game away.

Overall, Benson finished his day with 4.1 IP while being charged with three earned runs and five runs against in the loss. He would strike out two and walk two while facing 24 Torero batters. Pacific would use four relievers in the game while the Toreros would counter with three of their own. In relief, Jacob Hill (6-2) took the win with starter C.J. Burdick coming up with the no decision. Hill picked up the final two outs of the fifth for Burdick, stranding a pair of inherited runners to keep the game tied at the time. Burdick lasted 4.2 IP while giving up five hits and two runs to the Tigers.

Pacific stays on the road with a trip to Sacramento State on Tuesday, April 15 in midweek action as the Hornets and the Tigers pick back up their home and home series. The Hornets took game one of the series in Stockton two weeks back as Sacramento State held on for a 3-2 win over Pacific on March 31.
