Box Score Santa Clara, Calif. - One bad mistake proved to be the difference on the night as the Tigers' Will Lydon was out dueled by Santa Clara's Kevin George in a 3-2 contest on Saturday night at Schott Stadium. Despite a career-high 10 strikeouts for Lydon (0-6), the sophomore could not pitch the Tigers (4-20, 3-5 WCC) past the Broncos (13-12, 5-3 WCC) who grabbed their fifth-straight win and first WCC series victory of the season.
Just as they did the night prior, the Tigers sent eight batters to the plate in the top of the first inning as Pacific was able to score twice to take the early lead once again. With the help of some Bronco miscues in the field and three hits, the Tigers did their damage. An infield single by Tyler Sullivan started the rally for the Tigers as the senior leadoff beat out a chopper to second and the resulting bad throw put him into scoring position. After a wild pitch moved him to third, J.J. Wagner grabbed his sixth RBI in WCC play with a ground ball to short to put Pacific on the board. Staying hot, Gio Brusa started the next run-scoring rally with a double to right center. He would score on a single through the right-side by Louis Mejia as the throw home was wild. Pacific would load the bases later in the inning but Santa Clara's starter, George (2-2), was able to get out of the inning with no further damage.
The inability to deliver the big punch to George again cost the Tigers as it did the night before as the sophomore settled in and began to carve up the strike zone. He would finish going 6.0 IP while striking out seven, one off of his career high of eight while going through a final stretch of retiring 11-straight Tigers to end his night. He would exit with the lead and eventually claim the victory courtesy of his slugging shortstop, Jose Vizcaino Jr.
The Broncos' top hitter would account for the lead given to George as he came up with an RBI ground out in the bottom of third before putting Santa Clara ahead in the fifth with his sixth home run of the season. Vizcaino Jr. jumped on a mistake from from Lydon as he turned on a first-pitch fast ball and bounced it off the scoreboard just left of centerfield. The home run was the second two-run home run in as many games for Vizcaino Jr. as he put the Broncos ahead for good midway through the contest. The home run marked his second and third RBIs of the night, matching his total from the night prior.
After exiting prior to the seventh, George turned the game over to his bullpen which continued the run throwing nearly three more perfect innings if not for a two-out error in the eighth. Working around the error, Reece Karalus (7) earned the two-inning save for the Broncos as he struck out five while not allowing a hit.
Lydon finished the game with a complete 8.0 IP as he ended with 10 strike outs and no walks while allowing eight hits and three runs in the loss.
The Tigers will try to snap their four-game losing streak to the Broncos on Sunday, March 29, as the two teams meet for the final time at Schott Stadium. The afternoon contest is scheduled for 1:00 pm.
