Box Score Stockton, Calif. - Missed opportunities and a touch of bad luck proved to be too much for the Tigers (0-3) on Sunday, Feb. 15 as the Huskies (1-0) secured the series at Klein Family Field with a 4-0 victory in game three of the four-game set. Washington was able to come up with the necessary hits to plate the game's only runs as the Huskies handed Pacific its first shutout loss of the 2015 season.
In a weekend that seemed to be cursed for the Tigers after beginning on Friday the 13th, Sunday's matinee played out no different as Pacific could not get out of its own way while falling to the Huskies. After giving up an unearned run in the top of the first, the Tigers appeared ready to pounce for the first time in the series as they started the bottom half of the inning with a pair of hits to put runners at the corners. Despite the golden opportunity, the run was not to be as junior Brett Sullivan laced a shot to the right-side that should have scored senior Tyler Sullivan from third, but instead, struck junior Gio Brusa on the back foot, killing the play immediately. A line drive double play moments later killed off the chance and set the table for what was in store the rest of the way.
Throughout the game, the Tigers' chances would come but they were unable to seize the opportunities and change the course of the game. There seemed to be no bigger chance for the Tigers in the game than in the bottom of the fifth when Pacific was able to load the bases with just one out. However, Joshua Fredendall (1-0) , the Huskies' starting pitcher, was able to get out of the inning unscathed as he picked up the second of his two strike outs and an inning-ending fly ball. Pacific would threaten again in the sixth, but a base-running mistake ended the potential rally before it could start. From there, Washington's Spencer Jones (1) slammed the door with three flawless innings of relief and picked up a 4.0 inning save.
On the other side, the Huskies were able to come up with the clutch hits at every turn as they took advantage of any opening given to them by the Tigers to put a run on the board. In the third, it was a ball lost in the sun that setup the score for the Huskies while it was clutch two-out hitting and a dropped tag at the plate that pieced together runs in the seventh and eighth innings of play.
The Huskies spoiled the return of super senior Cory Popham (0-1) who pitched for the first time since an elbow injury took his 2013 and 2014 seasons. Popham lasted 4.0 innings in his season debut as he gave up four hits and two runs while striking out two and walking two with 79 pitches. The Huskies countered with their own sixth-year senior as Fredendall returned to the mound after two seasons to earn his first victory. Fredendall went 5.0 innings while giving up seven hits but no runs to the Tigers. In relief, Jones relinquished just two hits to the Tigers while keeping the scoreboard clean for Washington.
The Tigers will look to salvage the final game of the series on Monday, Feb. 16 when they send newcomer Sean Bennetts to the hill to face the Huskies. The game is scheduled for 1:00 pm as the teams celebrate Presidents' Day with an afternoon of baseball.
