Late Errors Cost Pacific Game Two Against The Huskies, 7-4

Box Score

Stockton, Calif. - Four unearned runs proved to be the difference in the contest on Saturday afternoon as Pacific (0-2) dropped the second game of the weekend to the Huskies (2-0), 7-4, at Klein Family Field. The win for the Huskies ensured Washington at least a split of the four game series after taking the opening two contests against Pacific.

Early in the day, the contest lived up to its billing as a duel of aces as Jake Jenkins (0-1) went to battle against all-american Tyler Davis (1-0) for seven solid innings. Jenkins came up with another high-quality start as the junior delivered 128 pitches and 7.1 innings of work before exiting the game with just a one-run deficit. On the other side, Davis went 7.0 strong to put the Huskies in position to win as he gave up just five hits and two runs to earn his first victory of the season.

The Huskies would take the slight advantage over the Tigers by scoring single runs in the second, third, and fifth innings of play as leadoff hits came back to haunt Jenkins in all three innings. Overall, Jenkins gave up just six hits and three runs while striking out eight and walking five.

His offense would give him a pair of runs in the bottom of the fourth when junior J.J. Wagner sparked a two-out rally with his first of two hits on the day. After singling to leadoff the frame, Wagner scored the opening run of the game on an RBI double off the bat of freshman Nate Verlin. Verlin scored the second run of the inning on a single by sophomore Danny Mayer as Pacific was able to knot the game at 2-2 at that point.

Down just one, the Tigers' saw the wheels come off in the top of the eighth inning as the Huskies took advantage of an extra out gifted to them by Pacific's defense to break the game open with three runs. All three runs came after the inning should have ended, costing Pacific three unearned runs. Redshirt-freshman Taylor Johnson was able to stop the bleeding for the Tigers as he picked up his first career strikeout in his first career appearance to end a based loaded threat. He would return for the top of the ninth where another Tiger error gave the Huskies all the insurance they would need to hold off Pacific. The combination of Brandon Choate and Will Ballowe (1) shut the door on the Tigers in the ninth as Ballowe picked up his first save of the season.

Prior to the ninth inning, the Tigers were able to cut the deficit in half at 6-4 with a pair of runs as the duo of Wagner and Verlin produced again. Wagner doubled in the first run of the inning for the Tigers with a shot to left center that plated junior Brett Sullivan who  had reached on a one-out single. Verlin plated the second run with a ground ball that allowed junior J.P. Yakel to score after he had reached on a walk and moved to third on the Wagner double.

The Tigers will look for their first win of the 2015 season on Sunday, Feb. 15 as they play game three of the four-game series against the Huskies. Pacific will be wearing their special camo jerseys as they Salute The Troops for the first time in 2015.
