Volleyball Drops Its Second Match To San Diego

Box Score

Stockton, Calif. - Taking on the No. 22 team in the country in San Diego, the Tigers could suffered their second-straight loss to the Toreros as USD swept Pacific on Thursday night at the Jenny Craig Pavilion. The loss for the Tigers marked their third-straight loss in conference play as Pacific fell to 14-10 overall and 5-8 in the WCC while the Toreros kept pace with No. 14 BYU at the top of the standings improving to 10-2 in conference play and 17-7 on the year.

Set scores for the match were: 25-23, 25-18, 25-19.

Leading for much of the first set due to the service game, the Tigers could not hold back the Toreros' attack in the end as USD flipped the set midway through the frame using a 6-1 run off of a called timeout take their first lead of the night. Down two, Pacific would rally back to tie the contest at 20-20 after back-to-back mistakes by the Toreros let Pacific back into the contest. The set would remain knotted at 23-23 before a pair of mistakes by the Tigers allowed the Toreros to slip away with the win, the final point coming on an ace as USD cleaned up the service game that played in the Tigers' favor early in the set.

In much the same manner as they closed out the first set, the Toreros used a 7-3 run late in the second frame to close out Pacific and take a 2-0 lead into the extended break. Early, the Tigers stayed with the Toreros behind a solid defensive effort out of the back line, but a ramped up Toreros' block changed the game as USD came up with three late blocks to finish off the victory. In the set, the Toreros posted five blocks after scoring just two in the opening frame.

With control of the match in hand, the Toreros put the match out of reach early in the third as they picked up where they left off in the second tallying five blocks in the first 20 points to put the Tigers in a six-point hole. Despite settling in, the Tigers could close no closer than four points the rest of the way as the Toreros put together their best offensive showing of the night to close out the match.

For the first time in 2015 the Tigers were held without a double-digit attacker as junior Lexi Elman tallied nine kills on 36 attacks to lead Pacific. While the junior outside struggled offensively, she was able to make her presence felt defensively as Elman came up with a match and season-best 18 digs. The Tigers hit just .108 as a team as the Toreros came up with 12.0 team blocks to go with 42 digs.

Lisa Kramer led all attackers on the night with a match-best 11 kills as the junior outside was the only player on either side of the net to come up with double-digit kills in the match. Overall, the Toreros hit .233 as a team after posting a .293 in the final set. Defensively, Addie Picha came up with a match-best seven blocks to pace the Toreros blocking efforts while Hunter Jennings chipped in 12 digs in the backrow.

Pacific is back in action on Saturday, Nov. 7 when the Tigers travel to Provo, Utah to take on the No. 14 ranked BYU Cougars at the Smith Fieldhouse. The match is scheduled for 1:00 pm MST and 12:00 pm PST.
