Near Misses Cost The Tigers In A 3-0 Loss To LMU

Box Score

Stockton, Calif - Playing even through much of afternoon, the Tigers suffered a tough loss at the hands of Loyola Marymount at home at Knoles Field as the Lions came up with a 3-0 victory on the first day of November. The Tigers fell to 1-13-1 on the year and 0-4-1 in conference play while the 2013 WCC champs improved to 8-8-0 overall and 3-2 in conference action.

Holding possession throughout much of the opening 45 minutes of the contest, the Tigers had their chances early to get on the board with early chances but came up just short of taking the early lead. Keeping the Tigers off the board was Paul Blanchette as he denied sophomore Tristan Blackmon's 35th minute attempt as Blackmon got behind the Lions' defense but saw his striking angle cut off by Blanchette. Just a eight minutes early, the Tigers saw a great opportunity just sail over the crossbar when junior Esteban De La Torre headed a centering pass towards Blanchette and the Lions' goal.

The near misses for the Tigers would prove costly just before half when the Lions found the back of the net to open the scoring with just over one minute to play in the first half. Earning their fifth corner kick of the first 45 minutes, the Lions' Luc Brubaker found the head of his teammate, Griffin Bell, at the near post with a in-swinger that Bell was able to redirect for his first goal of the year.

With the lead in hand just before half, the Lions were able to open up the flow of play in the second half of the contest, netting two more goals before the final whistle to secure the win. Out of the halftime break, the Lions struck for the second time five minutes into the half when Alvaro Madrigal took matters into his own hands, firing a shot from 23 yards out under the Tigers' Josh Adachi who dove to his right after coming off his line in an attempt to cut off the angle.

Down two, the Tigers again ramped up the pressure in an attempt to get back into the contest but found themselves on the wrong side of lady luck. In the 55th minute of play it was senior Kalei Gallarde who had a chance to put the Tigers' on the board but his bending shot from the left corner of the 18 hit the woodwork and sailed out of play. Four minutes later, the Tigers' sophomore Gaku Lange touched the twine only to have his celebration cut short when the offside flag went up on the far side of the field.

The two chances would prove to be the Tigers' best opportunities of the day to get back into the match as the Lions were able to add an insurance goal in the 62nd minute off the foot of Akio Ohtake-Gordon. Ohtake-Gordon was the beneficiary of a freeing run by John Bovill who dribbled into the Tigers' defense and slotted a ball to the Lion striker in front of the net.

Pacific hits the road for the final time on Nov. 8 when the Tigers head to the Pacific Northwest to take on Portland in a 1:00 pm contest on Sunday afternoon.
