Tigers Falter At Home Against Pepperdine

Box Score

Stockton, Calif. - Looking for redemption in their second go around against Pepperdine, the Tigers comeback hopes came up empty on Thursday night at the Spanos Center as the Waves took a 3-1 win to take the season series. The loss for the Tigers dropped their record to 14-8 overall and 5-6 in WCC play while the Waves improved to 14-11 and 5-6 in the conference.

Set scores for the match were: 25-22, 25-21, 18-25, 25-21.

From the outset, the Waves were able to control the net which allowed them to control the flow of play and with it, ultimately, the outcome of the match.

In the opening frame, the Waves used a big late run to take the set victory as Pacific led 20-17 late only to see Pepperdine win eight of the final 10 points. During the late run, the Waves ramped up their service game with the set on the line as Pepperdine posted a pair of aces and pushed the Tigers out of system to close out the frame.

A set late, it was a battle of wills offensively as the Lyons went to Nikki Lyons early and often for their offense while Pacific looked to its junior opposite, Alicja Wilk, to get things rolling. At the pins, Lyons came up with seven kills on 11 attacks while Wilk offered up six kill on 11 attacks. With the outsides opening the middles, it came down to Brooke Honeycutt versus senior Holland Crenshaw as the two middles each posted four kills. However, it was two kills from Honeycutt late and a block from the Waves' middle that turned the tides as the Waves broke open a one-point, 21-20, contest with three-straight points. In addition to the late kills, the Waves came up with three of their five set blocks late to secure the victory and head to the lockerroom up two sets.

Out of the break, the Tigers looked rejuvenated as Pacific came up with a balanced attack that had the Waves on their heels. The Tigers built their lead to as much as eight points at 22-14 before siding out the rest of the way to grab their first set win of the night. The Tigers hit a set-best .286 in the frame led by a nearly flawless attack out of Crenshaw as the big middle came up with four more kills on just five attacks.

Down 2-1, the Tigers could not find the same game they had in the third set in what would be the fourth and final set of the night as the Waves jumped out to a big early lead before siding out themsevles late to finish off the win. Early on, the Tigers had their chances to make things happen as the Waves passing game kept Pepperdine from going on the attack, however, the Tigers could not convert the opportunities. The Tigers would close the gap to just one at 11-10, but a 4-1 run by the Waves rebuilt the cushion they would use to hold off Pacific late.

In all, the Tigers were led by Crenshaw and Wilk as the two attackers each posted 13 kills. For Crenshaw, the senior hit .440 and added one block while Wilk hit .333 and came up with two blocks and one ace. Junior outside Lexi Elman struggled to get going throughout the night and was held to just 11 kills. She was able to show her presence in other ways as she led the team with 15 digs to post the double-double. She also added a match-best three aces.

For the Waves, Lyons led the match with 18 kills to go with nine digs and two blocks while Heidi Dyer added 12 kills and Honeycutt finished with 10 kills on .450 hitting. Defensively, the Waves came up with 13.0 total blocks led by Tarah Wylie who came up with seven blocks to go with nine kills. Setter Becca Strehlow finished her night with 46 assists and 10 digs to go with six total blocks.

Pacific will look to rebound on Saturday, Oct. 31, when the Tigers host LMU at the Spanos Center at 12:00 pm.
