San Jose, Calif. - The No. 4 Pacific men's water polo team cruised to a 16-6 win at San Jose State Thursday afternoon behind four goals from Devon Thumwood, three from Alex Obert and two each from Aleksandar Petrovic, Ikko Saito and J.T. Sarmento.
The Tigers improved to 17-2 overall and 4-0 in MPSF play. Tim Reeves, Derek Clappis and Mitchell Youhanna also scored for Pacific.
Brady Moore recorded eight saves in three quarters of action, while Zach Paxton added two saves in eight minutes of work. Each keeper picked up an assist.
Pacific jumped out to a 3-1 lead in the first quarter and stretched it to 8-1 at halftime. The Tigers led by as much as 11-1 with nine minutes left.
Obert opened the action with a pair of goals in the first, while Clappis tallied with 4:17 to go in the first on the power play. San Jose State's Alek Dendall put the Spartans on the board with two seconds left in the quarter.
In the second, Obert completed the hat trick on the power play before Reeves finished and Thumwood rattled off three consecutive goals to close the period at 8-1 Pacific.
Saito and Sarmento hit the back of the cage in the third, with Petrovic's first goal making it an 11-1 game with 2:23 to go in the third. Dendall scored with 54 seconds left in the quarter for the Spartans.
Nine goals were scored in the fourth, as the Tigers shuffled players in and out to rest the troops for a busy weekend. Sarmento posted his second, before Dendall completed his hat trick. Petrovic's second goal made it a 14-3 game before San Jose State's Akos Balazs picked up back-to-back goals. Thumwood finished off an assist from Clappis and Youhanna scored his first goal of the year with 2:06 remaining. In the final minute, Nick Serratos scored for San Jose State to round out the scoresheet.
The Tigers return home to Chris Kjeldsen Pool for a non-conference meeting with No. 14 Bucknell at 3:30 p.m. on Friday. Pacific will then play host to No. 2 Southern Cal in a Sunday showdown at noon.
