Los Angeles - The No. 5 Pacific men's water polo team cruised to an 8-2 win over No. 16 Santa Clara to open the SoCal Tournament Saturday at Loyola Marymount. Aleksandar Petrovic and Devon Thumwood each scored twice for Pacific.
The Tigers also received goals from Matt McKaig, Tim Reeves, J.T. Sarmento and Ben Stevenson. Brady Moore recorded 14 saves in goal for the Tigers.
Pacific improves to 12-1 overall and advances to the SoCal quarterfinals against No. 4 California. The Tigers have won 12 in a row, and are unbeaten in regulation.
Aleksandar Petrovic opened the scoring and J.T. Sarmento tacked on another as the Tigers led 2-0 midway through the first. Devon Thumwood added an even strength goal and Tim Reeves capped the scoring in the first quarter to give Pacific a 4-0 lead after one.
In the second, Matt McKaig tallied as the Tigers scored the first five goals of the game. Santa Clara cracked the scoreboard with a goal from Will Grant, but Petrovic answered and Thumwood polished off a feed from Kale Ai for a 7-1 lead at the half.
Both teams threw up a blank third quarter, with Moore making four saves and SCU's Troy Nadel matching with four of his own.
Graham McClone added a marker for the Bronocs in the fourth, and Ben Stevenson added a 6-on-5 goal with 2:06 remaining to cap the scoring.
Santa Clara falls to 4-11 on the year.
The Tigers' rematch with Cal will start at 5:20 p.m. Saturday. Pacific's lone loss was to Cal, back in the season opener in regulation, 13-11.
