Volleyball Falls To San Diego To Close Out The Weekend

Box Score

Stockton, Calif. - Closing out their first full weekend at home, the Tigers suffered a three-set loss to San Diego on Saturday afternoon at the Spanos Center. The loss was the third-straight for the Tigers as they slipped to 12-6 overall and 3-4 in WCC play while the Toreros improved to 11-6 and 5-1 in conference action.

Set scores for the match were: 25-19, 25-23, 25-23.

Using three big runs in each of their three set wins, the Toreros were able to outace the Tigers for the sweep in Stockton as USD won the first set going away before stealing away sets two and three.

In the opening set, the two teams struggled to find any offense as both factions hovered at .000 hitting for much of the set trading points through an array of kills and errors. Tied at 17-17, the Toreros pulled away for the first set victory with a 7-0 run as Pacific committed three offensive errors while USD came up with three kills and an ace to salvage a positive hitting percentage.

Down one, the Tigers looked for a response as Pacific found an early rhythm that propelled them to a four-point lead midway through the set at 16-12. Early on, the Tigers went to Alicja Wilk in the middle as the junior came up with four kills and a pair of blocks as Pacific tried to pull away. Despite the start, the Tigers could not keep up their attack as the Toreros turned the set around behind a 6-1 run that was sparked by a handful of Pacific unforced errors to go along with a reenergized Torero block. Down one at 18-17, the Tigers would never lead again as Pacific closed to within one at 23-22 before a service error gave USD the breathing room it would need to hold on for the win.

Set three turned into a repeat of set two, only with the rally beginning earlier for the Toreros, as the Tigers ran out to a six-point lead at 12-6 only to see USD respond behind another big run. Down six, the Toreros rolled off eight-straight points, using kills from Jayden Kennedy and Lisa Kramer, as well as four Tiger mistakes to make the third set into a fight. Trading points and mini-runs, the Tigers would finally take back the lead at 22-21 only to see a critical call go against them just as they looked to pull away late. The Toreros would use the momentum of the call to score four of the matches final five points, ending the day's action with a block and a kill by Kramer on an out of system swing to finish off the sweep.

For the first time the Tigers had to find offense elsewhere as junior Lexi Elman was held in check by the Toreros as the nation's third-leading hitter managed just 10 kills on 30 attacks. While the 10 kills led the Tigers, Elman was outpaced by Kramer on the other side of the net as the Torero outside finished with a match-best 18 kills on 40 swings, marking just the second-time in 18 matches this season Elman was not the match's leading attacker.

Behind Elman, sophomore Janie Feldsher came up with a career-best nine kills on .533 hitting while Wilk added nine kills to go with a match-best six blocks.

For the Toreros, Canace Finley chipped in 12 kills while Addie Picha led the defensive efforts with five blocks to go with four kills. Both teams posted 9.0 total blocks in the match with neither team cracking the .200 mark in the hitting department.
