Box Score Phoenix, Ariz. - After the dust settled, the Pacific men's soccer team lost 3-2 at Grand Canyon Saturday, despite goals from Tristan Blackmon and Esteban De La Torre.
The start of the game was delayed an hour due to a pre-game dust storm, and the start of each half featured a flurry of goals.
"We took another good step forward. We played some tremendous football at times tonight. We scored two very good goals tonight. But we made a few mistakes and Grand Canyon capitalized on those mistakes," head coach Ryan Jorden said.
Niki Jackson headed in a cross from Albe Sanchez Garcia just 1:49 into the match as Jackson snuck past the defenders as the Tigers fell into an early hole at Grand Canyon.
The Tigers answered right back just 40 seconds later with Blackmon finishing a feed from Tyson Fox by cutting in from the left side to knot things up at the 2:29 mark. The goal was Blackmon's second of the season.
The Antelopes surged ahead in the 26th minute, when Sanchez Garcia put a cross from Jordan Slack over Pacific keeper Curtis Goldsmith and into the back of the net for a 2-1 lead.
Grand Canyon outshot Pacific 12-7 in the first half.
Just 43 seconds into the second half, Jose Nieblas Rodriguez put Grand Canyon up 3-1, as he headed in a cross. Slack picked up the assist again on Nieblas Rodriguez's first goal of the year.
Again, Pacific answered back quickly, as Esteban De La Torre took a restart in the 48th minute, and placed it perfectly into the upper right 90 to pull the Tigers within one at 3-2.
Four minutes later, Pacific drew a foul in a similar spot. The Tigers played a quick run to the side, but Cervantes' shot hit the outside of the frame.
Pacific put five shots toward the goal in the second half, but couldn't draw even, playing the final eight minutes with 10 men following a disputed challenge.
"I thought we were gaining momentum in the second half," Jorden added. "But having a player sent off really changed the complexion of the last minutes."
GCU out-shot Pacific 20-12 for the match. Curtis Goldsmith made six saves in goal for Pacific, while Kendyl Day made two for the Antelopes.
Grand Canyon moves to 1-1-0 on the season. Pacific falls to 0-3-0.
The Tigers are back in action next Sunday, at San Diego State, at 7 p.m. at SDSU Sports Park.
