Box Score 2 Starkville, Miss. - Proving to be terrible guests in Mississippi State's home, the Tigers thrashed the host Bulldogs, 3-0, to finish off a clean sweep of matches at the Bulldog Invitational. The win for the Tigers ended their tournament at 4-0 and finished off the non-conference season for Pacific at 11-2 while the Bulldogs fell to 5-10.
Set scores for the match were: 25-13, 25-20, 25-11.
Picking up where they left off in the morning, the Tigers went on the offensive, trampling the host Bulldogs from start to finish en route to the easy win. The Tigers were able to use a balanced attack to do their damage as senior Gillian Howard finished with 11 kills while the pins, junior Kat Schulz and sophomore Lexi Elman, posted 12 and 11 kills respectively. In addition to her kills, Howard produced a match-best seven blocks while Elman finished with a career-high four blocks. As a team, the Tigers hit .424 (48-6-99) for the match while holding the Bulldogs to .020 attacking (22-20-99).
Early in set one it was all Howard as she picked up four of the first seven points of the set with three kills and one block. Howard's early efforts allowed the Tigers to slowly get their feet under them against the host Bulldogs, who did not play earlier in the day. After trading early points and leading by one at 7-6, the Tigers broke away from the Bulldogs with a relentless attack that led to an 11-3 run in which Pacific was able to double-up Mississippi State on the scoreboard. An attack error on just the seventh point of the set was the lone blemish for the Tigers offensively in the opening set as Pacific hit .457 (17-1-35) while holding the Bulldogs to just .029 attacking.
After burying the host Bulldogs in the first set, the Tigers took a more measured approach early before piling on late for the win. If not for a handful of service errors, the Tigers would have run away with the frame just as they did in the opening set as Pacific again blistered the Bulldog defense attacking .382 (17-4-34). Just like the first set, the Tigers broke open the set with a 10-2 that changed a one point lead into a commanding 22-13 advantage late. The Tigers would let the Bulldogs rally back late on a 6-0 run before closing the set out on a kill by junior Anne-Sophie Bauer.
Not letting the mini run in set two effect them, Pacific blasted the Bulldogs in the third set, running out to a 10-1 lead before giving up their first kill. Never letting up, the Tigers built their lead to 15-2 before the Bulldogs could string together a handful of points thanks to Pacific mistakes to avoid a record-setting loss to the Tigers. In the set, the Tigers were never threatened as they walled off the net from the Bulldogs' attack to put an end to the contest, holding Mississippi State to negative hitting in the set.
After the match, Schulz was named the MVP of the tournament while Howard and Bauer each earned all-tournament honors.
For the fifth time in 2014, Elman finished with a double-double after posting 11 kills and 12 digs to go along with four blocks and three service aces.
Just as the night prior, the lone blemish for Pacific in the match against Mississippi State was in the service game as the Tigers handed away 10 points on service errors.
Pacific begins WCC play on Thursday, Sept. 25 when they host No. 23 ranked and undefeated LMU at the Spanos Center at 7:00 pm.
