Men's Soccer Falters At San Jose State

Box Score

San Jose, Calif. - San Jose State turned a tight, scoreless game into a 4-0 win over the Pacific men's soccer team with three goals in a span of 3:20 in the second half.

The Tigers and Spartans played even for the first 71 minutes, but San Jose State's Greg Harte scored a pair of goals 1:47 apart, and Rory Knibbs added a third goal 1:33 later. Eric Mendez tacked on a late tally on the breakaway in the 87th minute.

Tyson Fox had an early scoring chance, but couldn't curl a shot around the keeper. Pacific strung together a series of short passes, building in the offensive end, but a run to goal was whistled offsides.

San Jose State posted a pair of first-half chances, with shots by Johnathan Colunga and Carlos Valdovinos each sailing wide.

Josh Adachi posted a save off a shot in the box from Knibbs in the 33rd minute, but the two sides went into halftime scoreless. San Jose State posted a 7-2 edge in shots, but Pacific held a 2-1 edge in shots on goal.

In the second half, both teams continued to play each other level until the 72nd minute when Harte sliced through the defense and finished to the lower right for a 1-0 lead. Harte struck again just 1:47 later, off an assist from Knibbs, laying the ball into the far post from the right side.

Within 93 seconds, Knibbs found the back of the net, finishing from the right side for his fourth goal of the season and a 3-0 margin.

The Tigers settled down, but pushing up exposed the backline to the count-attack as Mendez intercepted a pass at midfield and broke in with 2:04 remaining in the contest. He took the ball to the right side with a breakaway, and posted a top-shelf goal for a 4-0 advantage.

The Tigers were out-shot 18-5 for the match, but Pacific limited the Spartans to eight shots on goal to the Tigers' four.

Adachi finished with four saves, while Andrew Ciminelli added a save in the final 12 minutes. Felix Petermann posted four saves for the Spartans (2-4-2), going the distance.

Pacific (0-5-0) will face Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo on Sunday, at 1 p.m. in the final match of a six-game road stretch to open the 2014 campaign.
