Box Score 2 Berkeley, Calif. - Continuing their run from the night prior, the Tigers made short work of their old Big West rival UC Santa Barbara, 3-0, to start the second day at the Molten Classic on Saturday, Sept. 13. The win was the Tigers' second-straight sweep of the tournament as Pacific moved to 2-0 at the Classic and 6-2 on the year while the Gauchos fell to 1-1 in Berkeley. With the win, the Tigers claimed at least a share of the Molten Classic title.
Set scores for the match were: 25-19, 25-21, 25-23.
Dominating the pins as they in their first match, the Tigers got a career-performance out of junior Anne-Sophie Bauer as the third-year outside finished her most efficient match in the Orange and Black hitting .611. Bauer, playing on the left side, made just one mistake on the day as she pounded the Gauchos for 12 kills on just 18 swings. Her stellar performance bolstered a Tiger attack that was led by junior Kat Schulz who finished the match with 13 kills on .344 hitting. With the two firing at will, Pacific was able to hold the Gauchos at bay despite a strong blocking effort out of their side.
Just as many sets have been decided for the Tigers throughout the season, the opening set of play was decided by game-turning run midway through the frame that flipped a deficit into a big advantage. Down 11-9, the Tigers rallied off five-straight points thanks to a handful of forced errors by the Gaucho attack. With the lead, the Tigers put the match away on the arm of Schulz as she tallied four of her set-high five kills to close out the opening win.
With Schulz drawing the early attention in set two, it was Bauer who took control in the second set as the junior buried six kills on just seven swings. Waiting until just a little further into the set, the Tigers again broke open a close affair with four-straight points, turning a 15-15 set into a 19-15 lead. The run was started by Bauer as she accounted for two kills and one half of a block while her international teammate, sophomore Alicja Wilk, accounted for the other half of the block and one kill.
Looking for the sweep, the Tigers found themselves in a dogfight with the Gauchos throughout the third set as Pacific could knock shake the competition. Down 23-21 after a three-point Gaucho run and with a fourth set looking eminent, Bauer would not let her team fail as she put down a pair of swings to turn the tides of the set and with it the match. The third frame was an offensive dominant set as both teams hit over .300 by spreading the ball around.
Overall, the Tigers picked up a balanced attack behind Schulz and Bauer as Elman finished with nine kills while Wilk added seven and senior Gillian Howard produced four. Defensively, the Tigers were led by freshman libero Katrin Gotterba who produced 19 digs while Elman finished with 11. The block was led by Wilk and Howard as Wilk tallied four while Howard tied a career best mark with three solo efforts.
For the Gauchos, Jaylen Villanueva posted a team-best 10 kills on .258 hitting as the only attacker to record double-digit kills. She also added four blocks as UCSB posted 10.0 team blocks to the Tigers' 8.0.
