Men's Soccer Nipped By Bulldogs, 4-3

Box Score

Stockton, Calif. - Tristan Blackmon scored a pair of goals as the Pacific men's soccer team rallied from down 2-1, but were stunned when Gonzaga struck twice late to take a 4-3 decision Friday night at Knoles Field.

In Pacific's first action against a West Coast Conference opponent, albeit in a non-conference match-up, the Tigers and Bulldogs played a back-and-forth affair, with four lead changes.

Gonzaga's Clark Phillips scored in the 85th and 87th to give the Bulldogs their second win of the season.

The Tigers got on the board when Julio Cervantes made a run towards the goal in the 25th minute. As Cervantes tried to push the ball past the last man for a breakaway, the defender got a piece of the ball with a clearance attempt, but only enough to inadvertently chip the Gonzaga keeper.

With 1:12 before halftime, Gonzaga's Nate Pacheco slid a pass to the left side of the box for Nick Ulowetz, who finished to the lower right to tie the game.

In the second half, the Bulldogs took a 2-1 lead as Pacheco tapped home a two-on-one attempt off a feed from Ben Striar.

In the 75th minute, Jamie Bent corralled the ball on the right side near the endline, and timed his cross to the far post for Blackmon. Blackmon headed it over into the upper left corner for his third goal of the season and to draw the Tigers level at 2-2.

Just over four minutes later, Kalei Gallarde ran up the right side, cut in, and found Blackmon in the same spot for another goal and a 3-2 lead.

But the Tigers were victimized by a slick passing play in the 85th minute, as the Bulldogs put together a pair of passes to set up Conner Bevans on the left side. His shot to the far post was tapped in by Clark Phillips to even the game at 3-3.

And in the 87th minute, a Gonzaga counter-attack up the right side saw a cross to the doorstep for a wide-open Phillips for the game-winner.

The Bulldogs (2-7-0) outshot Pacific 21-9. Pacific falls to 2-6-0 on the year.  The Tigers will travel to Portland for a non-conference matchup with the Pilots on Sunday at noon.
