Stockton, Calif. - Swimming at home and celebrating their seniors, the Tiger swim team finished with strong midseason results as they hosted the likes of Nevada, Fresno Pacific, and Simon Fraser. The event was the last home event for the men for the 2014-15 season and penultimate home meet for the women. In the pool, on the men's side, the Tigers took both dual meet scores over the competition. Nevada swept the women's side while the Tigers beat Fresno Pacific and Simon Fraser.
"I'm very excited as it was a lot of fun to have an evening meet on a Friday night," said head coach Peter Richardson. "I'm very proud of the performances as we were training through the meet and swimming tired.
For the men, the opening relay swim of Curtis Klein, Jonathan Pun, Jared Vu, and Stewart Harrison impressed their coach as they flew out of the gate to take the first event of the night and set the table. The team started the things off well for the Tiger men and the rest of the team fed off the victory. The team clocked in at 1:33.79, just .20 in front of the second place squad. Klein would win three events beginning with the relay as he also took the 100 Back and 200 IM.
"Freshman Jonathan Pun had a standout performance winning the breast strokes and had a really good medley relay split that helped us touch out two of the best DII teams in the country. Liam does a really good job at Simon Fraser and Josh is doing a great job with Fresno Pacific. They swam really fast tonight, so it was really good to come out on top in the relay." Pun also won the 100 Breast with a time of 57.76 and the 200 Breast at 2:07.57.
Outside of the relay, Vu won the 100 Butterfly in impressive fashion as he put together his best in-season time of his career. Vu touched at 50.06 to beat the next best who touched at 50.25.
"The swimmer of the meet had to have been Brandon (Chandler) in his last home meet," stated Peterson. "He went crazy in the 1000 Free and the 500 free and I'm extremely proud of our team captain to go out like that at home.
For Chandler, he dominated the two distance swims for the Tigers as he came on strong at the end of the 1000 Free to take home his first win of the night. Down with four laps to go, Chandler kicked it into another gear and overtook Simon Fraser's Tim Woinoski for the victory with his fastest in-season time ever at 9:34.26. He would follow that with another in-season best to win the 500 Free at 4:39.49.
For the women, "Margaux swam like a beast to win the 200, 500, and 1000 Free, which is not an easy triple. It may be the toughest triple you can do," said Peterson. "It shows her toughness and perseverance to do that midseason."
Margaux Verger Gourson continued her dominance in the 500 winning it for the ninth time in her young career having never lost in the regular season. She clocked in at 4:57.21 as she swam the event after winning the 1000 Free and 200 Free.
"Fresham Kenna Ramey we knew was going to be great and a stud and she keeps proving it," stated Peterson. Ramey won both the 50 Free at 23.92 and the 100 Butterfly in a time of 55.80 to solidify her standing.
Vaiva Gimbutyte came up with impressive showings in the 100 Fly and 50 Free to bolster the Tigers' sprinters. "When you have the best sprinters then you have a chance to do some really big things at the conference level," said Peterson.
The Tigers have no time to rest as they hit the road immediately for a meet at Cal State Bakersfield starting at 12:00 pm on Saturday morning.
